You hated being smart. You hated having to tutor. You hated everyone picking on you for being a "nerd" or wearing your glasses. So you decided to change all of that when you started your first year at Karasuno High. You refused to be anything that anyone expected you to be. A fresh start so to speak. You begged your parents to get you contacts (even though you immediately regretted it), you wore your hair out of a beanie now, and you decided to just be a mediocre student. Well it seems mediocrity begets failure. As your teacher dropped your most recent science test on your desk, you forced back a dry laugh at the red F circled on the top. A soft huff caught your attention to the left and you saw Tsukishima flipping over his A+ paper.
"Hey Tsukki! What'd you get?" Tadashi asked quietly, the class already beginning to whisper about their grades.
"Same as always. You?" Tsukki tossed back a bored glance, his gaze casting over you for half a second before you averted your gaze.
Tadashi sighed, "Barely a C! I thought tutoring was supposed to help..." he mumbled.
You gathered your things into your bag and laid your head across your non-dominant arm, tracing patterns with your fingertips. Maybe you had become so engulfed in becoming someone else, you'd taken it too far. Your parents wouldn't forgive an F so easily. Maybe if it was the first one, but this was the fifth one in two months. Three of those came from science.
As the bell sounded, you began making a bee line for the exit before your teacher called out, "(Y/l/n), stay behind for a moment please."
'Oh no...' you thought, dreading the conversation you knew was approaching. With a heavy sigh and a careless wave to your teacher as you exited the room, your eyes traced the letters on the new paper in your hands.
'Tutoring form'
'Tutor: Kei Tsukishima'
This was really turning out to be a poor idea for a fresh start. Your first encounter with Tsukishima wasn't the most pleasant, to say the least. The way his eyes glared daggers at you, the way you could see his fist clench around the strap of his bag, it was clear that you were not a pleasant sight for him. After trying desperately for three weeks to get used to contacts before then, it was pointless it seemed, so you went to school with slightly less than average sight. You wanted to sit at a particular desk near the window, though didn't notice the pair of glasses perched on the corner. Tsukishima called you an idiot and lectured you just a bit on being more observant of people's things.
You had never felt the need to make conversation after that. You hadn't realized your feet carried you outside until you heard the fading squeak of shoes on the gym floor. You took in a soft breath and opened the door as the squeaking increased drastically, followed by the shouts of the volleyball team. You walked nervously a couple of steps inside, watching in awe as the guys ran around the court. You caught sight of Tadashi on the side doing drills and on the court you recognized Kageyama and Hinata as they hit a thundering spike.
"Your serve Tsukishima!" A voice called and your eyes averted to the other end of the court where Tsukishima stared blankly at the ball in his hands.
You watched as he effortlessly tossed the ball up, his long limbs swiftly moving like water as he served up the ball. Jeez. Did Tsukishima's eyes always glitter like that? Something behind his cocky smirk was almost invigorating to see. A light tap on your shoulder nearly made you jump from your skin. You pressed your hands firmly to your lips to prevent the unnecessary squeal of shock crawling up your throat. You tried to control your breathing as you turned to face a beautiful girl with glasses. Your ears tinted red as you took in exactly how pretty she was.
"Can I help you?" She tilted her head slightly.
You laughed softly and scratched the back of your neck, "U-um I'm just looking for Tsukishima."
She nodded, a hint of a smile gracing her featured as her hair shifted with her movements, turning to look at the court, "This is the match point so practice will end soon."
You nodded absentmindedly as your attention traveled from one group to the next. You didn't have a particular interest in sports, but it was enjoyable to watch. After the point was scored, the team huddled and had last words before dispersing. You stood by the door, awkwardly waiting before being approached.
"(Y/l/n)? What're you doing here?" Tadashi asked as he wiped the sweat from his neck.
You looked up at him, remembering the loose piece of paper in your palms, "Oh, I just needed to talk to Tsukishima." Your gaze cast away at mentioning his name, before giving a sheepish smile in Tadashi's direction.
"Why?" You furrowed your brow, realizing Tadashi's mouth never opened.
You glanced to your right and there stood the angry giant himself, glaring down at you. Instead of responding to his attitude filled response, you simply offered him the paper. His eyes danced over the words before shoving the paper back in your hands.
"No."
He turned his back to you, taking a drink of his water, "No?"
Tadashi slipped the paper from your hands, "No. Ask someone else." Tsukishima spoke rudely.
"I didn't even ask for you bean pole! So we're both out of luck." You ignored Kageyama and Hinata who nearly spewed water all over the place from hearing you call him a bean sprout.
"I said no." Tsukishima made his way towards the exit.
"Just wait here. Give me a second." Tadashi said, placing a hand on your shoulder before running up to Tsukishima, "Tsukki!"
You grumbled softly under your breath and crossed your arms over your chest in aggravation.
"(Y/l/n)." You looked towards the voice and met Tsukishima's eyes, "Let's go."
~
Well whatever Tadashi said to Tsukishima that day must've been something, because Tsukishima took on tutoring you for about three weeks or so after that. It's not like you needed a lot of tutoring, you just weren't putting forth a lot of effort and Tsukishima noticed it. He had started noticing a lot about you from your study sessions. He noticed the way you chewed on the cap of whatever writing utensil you were holding when you were doing mental problems. He noticed how your (e/c) orbs got wide when you realized your mistake before he even mentioned it. Sometimes he found himself even enjoying the way you always had snacks going when you studied at your house, and the way you kept his favorite protein drink stocked in appreciation.
But one thing he couldn't find an answer for, was why you were constantly staring at him. He always chose to sit near the window, enjoying the chance to look outside as you worked, but it never failed that you were looking in his general direction whenever he turned back. Not just staring. Squinting. And he was growing fed up.
"Stop that." He spoke as he scribbled some things down.
You zoned back from your own thoughts at his voice, "Stop what?"
"Squinting at me."
You scrunched your eyebrows together in confusion, "I wasn't squinting at you."
He cast a side glance your way, "I'm not an idiot. I wear glasses but I'm not that blind."
"But I wasn't." You sighed softly, facing your homework once again, "I was squinting past you..." You muttered under your breath.
"Why are you squinting at all? It's not like you wear glasses." Tsukishima stated with a bored tone.
You stayed silent, pulling your lower lip gently between your teeth. Tsukishima noted your sudden change in demeanor and shifted to sit across from you on the floor, verses at the desk by the window. You scoot back just a bit, back hitting your bed as he stared pointedly at you.
"Or do you?" He smirked just slightly and your face heat up slightly, though you never looked up from your work, "(Y/l/n)." He tried getting your attention.
You simply hummed in response. There's no way you were going to let your newfound crush know anything else about you. He'd probably make fun of you like everyone else.
"(Y/n)." Now you had to look up, if nothing but out of pure shock that he used your first name.
You instantly regretted it, losing your voice and confidence as you breathed out, "Y-yeah?"
Tsukishima chuckled a bit, "Somethings always bothered me about you." He paused, but spoke up before you could question him, "You're always squinting like you need glasses. And you never look up at the board during class. You seem to do pretty decently in your other classes, and you almost never need things explained more than once. So I was figuring that..."
He took an unnecessary dramatic pause for effect as his smirk never wavered and you spoke together.
"You like me."
"I'm a nerd!"
You both froze immediately as you pursed your lips together. You figured you'd get it out of the way and save the embarrassment, but Tsukishima's guess, although right, brought a different type of blush to your cheeks and ears.
"Wait what?" Tsukishima furrowed his brows in a deep crease, though he seemed a bit deflated that you weren't on the same page, "Nerd?"
You nodded softly, "W-well yeah. In junior high people made fun of me for being a nerd and doing so well in school. So I ditched the glasses, tried contacts, failed, and decided to be a mediocre student. I suck at science cause I just can't read the examples on the board..."
"So," Tsukishima took in a soft breath, "You and Yamaguchi didn't plan this so I'd like you back?"
You frantically shook your head and waved your hands about in a panic, "W-what? No! I-I wouldn't! I'm too scared to talk to you properly let alone put together some plan like that! And Tadashi and I barely talk out of class..."
Tsukishma's expression turned curious, "You're scared to talk to me? Figures..." He mumbled, turning his eyes to the side.
In another fit of panic, you moved closer, "I don't mean it like that! Not like you're scary or anything but you're intimidating... in a good way! And I just get so nervous cause I want you to like me too but I-"
You were cut off by a quick, but chaste kiss to your lips by Tsukishima. As quick as it happened, his lips were gone and his cheeks pink from embarrassment.
"Even if it wasn't your plan... I'm sure it was Tadashi's... it still worked." You almost didn't hear him but you most certainly did as your heart did cartwheels.
"Oh wow." Was all you could manage at first, "Wow um... I'm sorry I don't know how to handle someone popular liking me back."
He simply chuckled and removed his glasses, placing them on your face and suddenly everything was a different kind of intense clarity.
"There. Maybe now I can see your eyes and you can stop squinting at me."
You bit your lip once more and adjusted the glasses, "Thanks Tsukki."
With a comfortable silence falling over you two, nothing else felt like it needed to be said as you finished your homework, holding back your giggles as Tsukishima laid out on the floor, now being the one to squint at you without his glasses.
But he didn't care. Now he could see your (e/c) eyes just as he had the first day he'd seen you, and he didn't ever want to look away.~~~~~~~~~~
So this was more fluff than anything I guess? I wasn't trying to have this end where they immediately confess their love and end up together. Sometimes just starting the bond is enough right? So one or two more one shots to follow. One for sure. The second might come as an update. Enjoy!
