Summer. Swings. Sound of laughter not far away. What a vibrant afternoon.
But for Thomas, it's merely the difference between going through the multiplication table for the seventh time in the day with the noise of washing machines or other children screaming down the slide.
He wanted to join the big boys' tag game, or try the slide for the first time after constantly passing through for the sixth year of his life, or just laugh. He would be satisfied with any. But not those glances other kids throw to him every now and then, either because of his small eyes or the light yellow skin. Of course, they were respectful and looked away every time their eyes met, even though he couldn't just stay oblivious forever.
8 times 7 goes 56. 8 times 8 goes 64. 9 times 9 goes...
"Ouch..."
A sudden thrust landed on his back, now he forgot which number did he get to. With a thud, something fell onto the grass and rolled to his feet. So it's a tennis ball.
A girl in soft green t-shirts ran towards him from a distance, yelling words of apologies along the way.
"It's alright." he said as he ducked down to pick the ball up.
"You seem quite lonely here, you wanna join?"
Before he could answer, instead of taking the ball from his hand, she seized his wrist and dragged him along, beaming.
"Wait..."
"Huh?"
She stopped and turned around.
"Em..."
He looked up. The mid-afternoon sunlight was poured onto her cocoa skin, glittering.
"Ehem..."
And her hair was floating in the breeze, like a veil of a bride, soft and light, but black.
"If you don't want to join you don't have to..." She interrupted as her seize softened.
But those eyes, those light brown eyes under the sunlight. He had seen thousands of pairs of eyes, black, hazel, green, even blue once, yet this pair of ordinary brown eyes staring into him seemed different from the rest. Is it because of the sincerity of the gaze? He hadn't looked closely into any eyes before, but usually they were either filled with doubt, disbelief or dislike. But this pair was sparkling with hope.
"It's okay, I'll join if you want."
"Awesome!" A crescent formed on her eyelids as she smiled again, with her head slightly tilted to the side. "Call me Rae."
"Thomas."
She held out her hand. Trembling, possibly because of the nervousness, he reached to hers to respond, but instead of a brief shake, she held on.
"C'mon, they're waiting for us!" So that's what Tinkerbell sounds like.
His hand was still in hers when they rushed to the group.
He hoped that his yellow skin covered up his blush.
