When Harry got his hogwarts letter, he sent a reply and met Remus Lupin, and he agreed to become Harry's magical guardian, not wanting Dumbledore to get it back again.
After that, they bought Harry all the books he need and a few extra in case he is bored, from Petunia Harry decided to get a book about wandless magic for his birthday and from Remus he could buy him his familior if he found one.
At the pet store(I can't remember the name) he suddenly felt a pull from his magic. He quickly followed the pull until he he saw what his magic was pointing at: a snowy owl sitting in a corner, "are you my master?" She said, "yes, I think so" said Harry "finally," she cheered "I have been bonkers here in this corner, oh and what should you name me? Master." "How about, Hedwig, and call me Harry" He decided "OK, Harry" she chirped.
