Garfield POV:
Garfield would consider himself a pretty happy go lucky guy. He didn't like to focus on the bad, what was the point? It wasn't going away and it would just bring him down if he thought about it. The truth was he was afraid that if he opened his thoughts to the bad, the horrors would never stop coming out.
Despite what his sunny demeanour would indicate, his life wasn't all walking on sunshine. He tried not to think about all the...lessons his parents taught him. Or the fact that it was his fault they died. And he certainly did not like to think about all he was forced to do after their death. Every time his mind flashed to those initial days, he felt himself slipping into a primitive form, where it was a kill or be killed world with no way out. In those moment, he felt more like a beast than a boy.
So he tried to never let his mind wander in that direction. He used his humour to deflect any curiosity his teammates might have about his past, and for the most part it worked. Until...Terra.
In her he saw himself. Someone who was dealt life's shitty hand because she was different and strong and beautiful and...more than anything he could ever deserve. He saw the signs of abuse and neglect and knew that their pasts weren't so different. He saw the way she opened up to him and felt himself respond in kind. It was the first time he felt like someone understood what he went through. She saw everything he was and everything he was forced to become and she still liked him. She had even began to love him. And then She...died. And he couldn't handle it.
He still couldn't. It had been years since she passed away and Garfield had yet to open that door in his mind. So like everything in his life, he deflected with humour and ignored the bad because what was the point in letting it in?
Rather than wallow in the shitty hand that life dealt, he chose to believe that if you look hard enough you could find the silver lining in every cloud. Walk on sunshine, and all of that jazz. Even with all his positivity, he had to admit it was hard to find the silver lining in this situation.
He had just challenged Superman into an arm wrestling competition and Superman had accepted. I am going to die, this is the last time anyone will see this blessed face, he thought. In the back of his mind he knew that Clark wouldn't kill him, he was a superhero after all, but Garfield also knew he would never recover from this humiliation. Let's just get this over with, he thought with a sigh before grabbing on to Clark's hand.
Even his hand feels like steel Garfield noticed as he tried to get a good grip on his hand, it was a little hard to do when Clark's palm wasn't even the slightest bit soft. It felt like grabbing on to a thick sheet of metal. Geez does this guy benchpress a truck he thought before realizing he probably did. Screw you Jaime.
He looked up at Superman to see him give a sympathetic look, as if saying 'Don't worry kid, I'll go easy on you". Garfield winced before saying "Ready. Set. Go"
Immediately, his hand felt like a plane was landing on it, it was all he could do to swiftly shift into a bear so that his hand wouldn't get entirely crushed. Superman burst out laughing in surprise before readjusting his grip on beast boys claw. Garfield knew the only reason his hand hadn't gone through the table was because superman was taking pity on him and not making an effort to win the match. The thought embarrassed him enough that he shifted once again this time into a gorilla. Yet again Clark simply readjusted his grip and kept himself from pulverizing Garfield's hand.
And so the charade went on for a few more seconds, with Garfield changing into the skins of different animals in an attempt to to move Clarks hand, hell he even became an octopus at one point and grabbed his hand with all his tentacles and yet Superman's hand might as well been a the titan tower for all it moved.
Right when it looked like Clark was getting bored of the match and was ready to end it, his hand unexpectedly slipped and lost strength for all but a second. Not one to waste such a monumental opportunity Garfield tightened his grip and pushed with his entire body until superman's hand touched the table. He had won.
The entire table stared down at Beast boy's victory in shock. Clark and Garfield looked at each other to see the same confusion mirrored in the others expression. What just happened? Had he... won? Not one to look at gift horse in the mouth Garfield quickly composed his expression into one of victory and gave out a loud whoop.
"I beat him! I beat the Man of Steel!" He exclaimed in happiness. He turned around to brag to his companions to see they all had the same shocked expression in their faces. Even Batman looked mildly surprised at the unexpected turn of event.
Garfield was still celebrating when he saw Jinx and Wally standing on the side giving him identical smirks. Jinx gave him a wink when she saw his attention on them. His confusion at the win gave way to the understanding that Wally must have convinced Jinx to pull a prank on Superman. And he had won as a result of that prank. Although it diminished his sense of victory he knew he wouldn't have won without their help. So he gave them a wink in return and continued to celebrate his oh-so-well-earned victory.
See? He knew there was always a silver lining to any situation, even if this one was drawn on by a very lucky girl.
Authors note:
I changed it up a bit, it was a more fluffy chapter than I would've liked it to be so I added some of Garfield's backstory in it. Hope you enjoyed loves.
