Raven's POV
She looked away as soon as their eyes connected. It was too much to look into his eyes at times, she had the sense that he could look into her mind and read her thoughts. It was disconcerting. She hoped he hadn't seen the furtive glances she had been shooting him the entire night but she couldn't help herself. Ever since she had seen into his mind she couldn't shake the sorrow and loneliness she had felt. For all his bravado Damian was often conflicted and didn't feel he deserved to be loved. She wanted to approach the topic but she had a feeling he would shut it down and tell her to mind her own business.
So she kept quiet, not that that was a rare phenomenon for her. It seemed they both enjoyed the silence, something that was often lacking in a team filled with loud personalities. It also explained why they kept together as they drifted through the carnival. Both were content to watch as Jaime and Garfield played the various carnival games.
When Jaime broke the high striker game with the help of his insect companion, Raven turned to see Damian roll his eyes and give her a look that told her exactly what he thought of their juvenile shows of strength. Thats when she looked behind him and saw his distorted image in one of the fun house mirrors. The sight was so bizarre she couldn't help but let out a giggle that she quickly tried to stifle with her hand. But it was too late.
"What?" Damian asked defensively.
His anger and slight embarrassment made her giggle harder and she could only point her finger at the mirror behind him. Damian turned around to see what was making her laugh and he let out a small exclamation of surprise at his image. His surprise gave way to a sly grin when he saw that her own image was also distorted in another mirror. He turned back to her and pointed to her image. She grinned at him and playfully swatted his hand away as they good-naturedly ribbed at each others images.
It seemed that the spell over them broke from that moment onwards and they began to have fun in earnest. When Garfield decided to play the ring toss next, Damian also decided to give it a try. If anything it would help improve his aim at throwing batarangs he reasoned. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was competitive to a fault. No, he just wanted to practice throwing 6 rings at a time and getting them all in. Which he did. Obviously.
As they continued to play they discovered that Raven was quite skilled at games of chance, she could accurately guess weight and age like no other. And no one could beat Damian at a game of darts. However they both tied at the rope ladder climb and agreed to come back later to try again. To everyone's surprise they were all having fun and actually enjoying each others company. Once they had played their share of games, Raven went with Damian to cash in his tickets. She had given her own tickets to Garfield, she wasn't the type to buy plush animals or plastic toys.
It was no surprise to Raven when she saw Damian spent all of his tickets to get a plastic sword, of course he would want a weapon. What did surprise her was when she saw his glance at a little girl who was admiring his sword, and what really warmed her heart was when he knelt down and gave it to her.
She was still looking at him when he turned and saw her watching. "I got my first sword when I was half her age, she needs to learn to defend herself" He told her defensively. She nodded as if she agreed but they both knew he had given it to her because she was looking at it with admiration. It seemed what Raven had sensed in Damian's mind earlier was true.
She chose not to say anything however and instead suggested they get something to eat instead. While Damian got a lemonade, Raven opted for cotton candy. For all her dark clothes and gothic attire, the young titan had a secret sweet tooth that rivalled even Kori's. She loved anything that had sugar and even had a secret stash of sweets in her room at the tower, not that she would admit it to anyone, or share for that matter.
She offered some cotton candy to Damian, and she could see that he was going to reject it but changed his mind at the last second. "This taste like pure sugar" he claimed impassively.
"Boy were you up in those mountains for a long time" she replied slightly teasing in her usual dry humour way. She instantly regretted it when she saw Damian's shoulders straighten and him loose his relaxed demeanour.
"It was a joke" She said quickly, trying to prevent his walls from going back up.
"I know it was a joke, and if you knew me you wouldn't bother trying" He replied coldly.
"I guess neither of our childhoods were very fun" Raven agreed. "But I'll tell you something about yourself that not even you know, you may be insufferable, but on the inside you are a kind and generous soul". Damian looked at her with a bit of surprise on his face. He had just opened his mouth to say something when they both heard cheers from the crowd as Garfield beat Jaime at Dance Revolution.
They both went and caught up with the rest of the Titans in time to see Garfield gloating about his victory. "Please no autographs, I'm a busy man"
"Free popcorn to anyone who can beat the beast" Jaime said with an irritated scowl.
Not one to shy away from a challenge, Damian said " I can take him".
The rest of the Titans gaped at him. "You know how to dance?" Raven asked him surprised.
"I'm a quick study" He replied confidently as he walked up to the stage.
This was sure to be interesting.
