Chapter Fifty-One: The Emerald Earrings

Your exhausting morning started with a text from a rather exhausted classmate. You poked your head out from under your covers to check your phone again to make sure you hadn't imagined it. Between the stress of your new work study, your school work, and the balancing act you seemed to be performing in the relationship department, your quirk had been playing rather unsettling tricks on you. To get back at you for the pressure, your mind had literally gotten you up almost every night that week either with sleepwalking or nightmares. Not to mention your memory had been degrading, which had been becoming more and more evident as your classmates would insist you had set up plans to study or hang out, and you simply forgot, not even recollecting the exchange. You weren't a tardy person normally, and you hated missing any opportunity to hang out with friends. It was beginning to become disheartening. You were always someone others could rely on, and now you were worried your reputation would forever be tarnished by your less than amiable quirk.

"Meet me behind Heights Alliance in ten minutes. We need to talk," the text read from Shinso, aloof as ever.

You bit into your bottom lip. Did you forget plans you made with Shinso? Was he worried? Was he angry? He didn't even use "Kitten" at the beginning of his text, which didn't bode well for you.

"Okay," you texted Shinso back.

You sighed. You clambered out of your bed, getting dressed quickly and setting out toward the back of Heights Alliance. The day was particularly dreary. Rain clouds circled school grounds, and you pouted at the bitter rumble that cackled along the sky's edge. What was so important that Shinso had to talk to you outside? He hated going out in the rain, rather he hated the rain because he couldn't escape to the building's roof. He also hated getting up early. Something had to have been bothering him.

You leaned back into the shadow of the building, humming softly to yourself as the morning chill brushed your fingertips. You crossed your arms, rubbing them and looking around. It wasn't exactly like him to be late.

Your mind wandered, calculating everything you needed to get done with that day as far as schoolwork. Lately you'd only slept long enough to get back to studying, training, or working. Anything to be a Pro Hero of course, but it was still taxing. You weren't the only one experiencing this. Midoriya, Asui, Kirishima, and Ochaco were all training early in the morning and working late into the night. You thought maybe Shinso called you out there this morning because he had also started working with an agency. You hadn't been able to talk much about it with him, considering your busy schedules.

Somewhere between waiting for Shinso and thinking about what needed to be done that day, you'd fallen asleep. You were woken up by a gently nudge to your shoulder and a light chuckle.

"Taking a cat nap, Kitten?" Shinso asked, leaning down to catch your bleary eyes as they opened. He hadn't let go of your shoulder, probably in fear you might panic when you'd woken up from your standing nap.

You pouted up at him. "You were late," you said.

"Late?" he raised an eyebrow at you. "You told me to meet you here in a half an hour."

You furrowed your eyebrows, pulling out your phone and shaking your head. "You told me to meet you."

Shinso chuckled again. "Are you feeling okay, Kitten? I know you've been stressed out, but you definitely texted me."

You unlocked your phone again, only to find that no one had actually texted you. You had texted Shinso to meet you. You widened your eyes, reading over the message again. "I-I was barely awake this morning. I don't even remember texting you."
