Chapter Thirty-Eight: Survival Training with the Sniffles

"To repeat what we've already briefed you on earlier this week, today, you will be completing rescue training in order to prepare you for the upcoming Provisional Hero Licensing Exam. This is also why we will all be meeting at Ground Beta," Mr. Aizawa said.

As you hadn't been in class for a few days, it had been difficult for you to completely get back into the swing of things. You were still ill, but it was becoming apparent if you missed anymore days that you were going to fall behind. No matter how many times you'd snuck studying in under Bakugo's watchful eyes, you knew it wasn't going to be as helpful as actually learning in the classroom. It seemed that recovery wasn't going to speed up. The quirk-based illness wouldn't do any harm to your classmates, only to you. It also appeared that your quirk sneezes had ceased. The only worries that you had now were your fluctuating fever spikes and the occasional sniffle. Although the way you'd been spacing out lately, didn't help matters or assure Mr. Aizawa that he shouldn't worry.

In a haze, you'd readied up in your hero costume, only half paying attention to what team you'd been placed on. There were ten other classmates with you. Asui, Uraraka, Midoriya, Bakugo, Tokoyami, Kirishima, Yaoyorozu, Iida, Kaminari, Todoroki, and you stood at the base of the wreckage. Yaoyorozu briefed you all on the statistics of the situation. The building was tall, unstable, and a citizen was somewhere inside that needed rescuing. All of your textbooks had prepared you for this very situation.

You watched Bakugo immediately throw a fit, already marching in the direction of the building on his own, as you'd assumed he would. He paused briefly. His vermillion eyes scanned you. You stood firm in your position next to your other classmates. It was one thing that he wanted to go off on his own, and it was entirely another that he wanted you to go with him. Yes, he'd helped you while you were sick. No, that didn't mean the two of you needed to be attached at the hip. You'd had plenty of time to think about what your quirk's decision to make him your protector meant to you.

"Big Brain," he said sternly, observing the set in your jaw.

"In rescue situations, communication and teamwork is key. I believe we should discuss this before we go storming in," you stated.

Bakugo's eyes widened. He squared his shoulders as if he was ready to drag you in himself. The rest of your classmates held their breath. Sure, Bakugo was nicer to you, but he was still Bakugo.

I'm not going with you. I'm not saying you're wrong not to act in haste, but I believe that we should work together on this, so I'm not going in without talking with everyone first. You were careful just to enter Bakugo's mind.

He narrowed his eyes at you, clicking his tongue. Your quirk chose me—

It did, you interrupted his thoughts. But, I didn't. I need to be able to handle myself without help.
