"WHAT?!" I yelled, a little louder than I intended "What do you mean he 'doesn't think that it's a good idea that I hang out with you?!'"

"It's all cause' you're a girl. He's afraid you'll date one of the boys and that you'll get pregnant. More specifically, he's afraid I'm going to date you and get you pregnant. I don't agree with him one bit. His logic is wacko. I need you to help me prove him wrong. I already said you're coming over tonight."

"You don't need to ask me twice. I'm sorry Soda, but you're probably the last person I'll ever date."

"Tell that to Darry, not me!"

"Right."

So that whole day we came up with a plan. Which pretty much just consisted of me being myself. Only I was going to act more like a "bro" then I normally do. And curse more.

So finally when work was over, Soda and I started walking over. I had changed into the most "masculine" clothes I could find, which wasn't that hard because my wardrobe mainly consists of flannels and blue jeans. I teased my short shoulder-length brown hair to make it look a little bit messy. I'm not gonna lie, I looked more like a "bro" than any of the other gang members.

I was about to knock on the door when Darry opened it before I had a chance to. I put on the biggest natural smile I could and I was off.

"You must be Darry! I have been dying to meet you. Soda has told me so much about you. I heard you're a great cook. Who doesn't love a guy that can cook?"

I went in for a slap-hand shake (go in for the handshake at a high speed so it makes a slapping sound when your hands meet), which worked pretty well. I gave him a pat on the back as I walked inside. I decided to keep up the conversation with Darry in a friendly manner.

"Man, Soda is such a great guy. He could make any girl fall for him. Any girl...except me!" I exclaimed. I punched him in the arm and got him in a headlock. Then I proceeded to tussle his hair.

"Oh no you don't!" exclaimed Soda. He flipped me over and attempted to slam me on the ground. I landed on my feet, avoiding him, and shoved him one more time. We were both laughing like when we first met. Then I realized that Darry was still staring at us.

"Sorry Darry, I got a little carried away there," I said

Darry's firm expression softened, and he let himself smile.

"Dinner's almost ready. You're welcome to stay if you'd like."

"I'd be honoured."

Me, Soda, Ponyboy and Darry were all gathered around their little table. Darry had cooked steaks, and my oh my were they delectable.

"Man, you really can cook," I said as I finished my meal.

"Why, thank you."

"I mean it. I can hardly ever cook properly. It's a miracle that my house is still intact."

Darry let out a chuckle.

"So Ponyboy, you've been awfully quiet all evening," I said.

Ponyboy looked up. I don't think he was used to older girls trying to initiate conversation, because when I tried his face turned red.

"Who, me?" asked Ponyboy

"Yes, you," I said with a chuckle.

"Sorry, Audrey. I don't got too much to say."

"Oh, I'm just messn' with y'a." I shot him a friendly smile. He looked back down at his plate before he saw.

I saw Darry get up to do the dishes. I was not about to let him do that, at least not alone.

"Oh, Darry, let me help with that" I called out to him.

"Oh please, you're our guest, sit down-"

"That wasn't a question. I'm helping you whether you like it or not."

Halfway through the dish cleaning, Darry says
"I really hate to ask this, but do you mind if I excuse myself for two seconds? I mean I really hate-"

"Goooooooo," I said, "You've done quite enough already, you know, cooking and all."

Darry left the room, but I knew what he was going to do. He was about to talk to Soda about what he thought of me. I tried eves dropping, but the running water muffled their conversation.

After ten minutes he came back in. I was just about done. Darry asked if he could talk to me.

"So, this is kind of a weird question to ask, but can you be honest with me please?"

"Yeah, sure. What's up?" I asked, putting the last frying pan away.

"Are you and Soda dating or not?"

"Me? And Soda? Dating?" I burst out laughing. Something about that thought was so funny to me.

"God no. He'd probably be the last guy I'd ever date." I laughed some more. I had to hold onto Darry or else I might have fallen over.

"Sorry about that. Woo. But no. Me and Soda are not, and we never will be, dating."

Soda walked into the kitchen.

"What's with all the noise out here?"

"Darry thought I was being flirtatious to you or something." I started laughing again.

"Jesus Audrey, calm down," he said. But I guess my laughs were contagious because soon Soda was laughing too.

"Ohh, fuck" I said between wheezes "my sides are starting to hurt."

"Well, I'm glad you're in a good mood because Steve and Two-bit will be coming over soon."

Soda and I went to walk into the living room. But before I did I got one more good look at Darry's face. He was confused, surprised, and most likely caught off-guard.
