I woke up early the next morning and decided that I would try to make breakfast. I got a quick shower, threw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, and got started.

The pancakes didn't work, so I made toast and eggs instead. Johnny got up an hour later and fixed the pancakes. I thanked him and we sat down to eat.

"So," Johnny started, "Now that you've successfully been my wingman, I'm volunteering myself to be yours."

"Pft, you're not being serious right now," I laughed. "Cherry's straight."

"I thought Pony was straight. And he wasn't," said Johnny.

"Pony is a special case. But seriously, Cherry has a boyfriend," I explained.

"Didn't you say she hates her boyfriend?" asked Johnny.

"Well... I mean you're not wrong. But still, why in the name of god would she willingly date me?"

"Hey, if we were both straight, I'd probably ask you out. Just sayin'," said Johnny.

"That's a weird compliment, but I'll take it," I laughed.

When we were finally done, Johnny left to go to the movie theatre with Ponyboy. I went to work. And for the next week and a half, everything felt normal.

Then, on the Tuesday before Cherry and I were going to leave, I wanted to hang out with Soda one last time before I left. I walked down to the Curtis's and Knocked on the door. Darry answered.

"Oh, hi Darry! How've you been, man?" I asked. I noticed his nose was different shades of purple and blue. "Jeez, did I do that?" I asked, pointing to his nose.

"Oh, this? It's fine, don't worry about it. Listen, uh, I've been meaning to talk to you, mind stepping inside for a minute?" asked Darry.

"Sure?" I said, walking through the doorframe. I wasn't sure what he wanted to talk to me about, but I thought it had something to do with the whole hospital fiasco.

I sat down on the worn, leather couch in the living room. Darry sat in a chair across from me.

"So... what'd you wanna talk to me about?" I asked.

"Well, firstly, I wanted to apologize. I overreacted. And I put you in the hospital. That was absolutely horrible of me. And frankly, I feel like I deserved this," he said, pointing to his nose.

"No, no, Darry, it's alright. I forgive you."

"An' I wanted to thank you."

"Wait, what? Why?" I asked.

"For knocking some sense into me. I mean, I don't remember why I hated queers in the first place. An' I'm pretty sure Pony's gay, so thank you for stopin' me from doing anything stupid in the future."

I laughed lightly. "No problem, Darry. I'm glad I could help. Oh, jeez, I almost forgot, do you know where Sodapop is?"

"He should be at the DX," said Darry.

"What? Why? I thought he was taking this week off."

"I think he's jus' down there for the hell of it," explained Darry.

"Alright then. I'm gonna go find him. I'll see ya 'round!" I said as I exited through the front door.

I started walking down the street. The DX was only a few blocks away, so I walked. Sure enough, Sodapop was there with Steve.

"Hey, guys!" I yelled.

"Oh, hey Audrey!" called Soda. He started walking towards me. "Wanna go for a walk?"
