I opened the door to reveal Cherry Valence, looking absolutely gorgeous. She was wearing a pink knee-length skirt and a white tank top with a shawl thrown over her shoulders. It was simple yet gorgeous.
"Hey you," I said with a smile.
"Hello, m'lady." She took my hand and kissed it. I knew she was joking, but I couldn't help but blush. I let her inside and guided her to my room. I lit the candles and set down supper. I also picked out the record "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and set it down on my record player.
"Wow, you've truly transformed the place. It's very beautiful. Almost romantic." she said with a grin. Was she flirting with me? Whatever she was doing I really enjoyed it.
We had finished supper and were sitting on my bed. We were talking away when I heard a knock on my door.
"Stay quiet, if it's one of the guys it would be awkward. They don't exactly know about you yet." I told Cherry.
"Okay," she whispered back.
I closed my bedroom door behind me and went to go answer it. Soda was standing on the other side.
"Soda? What are you doing here?" I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
"I want the truth, Audrey."
I was confused. I had no idea what he was talking about.
"What?"
"Why are you being so secretive?"
"Why do you say that?"
"Don't play dumb! Ever since Thursday night, it seems like you've been keeping something from me! You hid from me all day yesterday, and today you looked at the clock, cursed and left without an explanation! Not to mention all the times I've noticed you staring off into space. You're hiding something from me. I thought we were friends. I thought you could trust me."
I let out a sigh.
"Fine. I'll tell you. But you need to promise me you won't tell anyone else. Especially no one in the gang."
"Cross my heart."
I opened the door to my house and motioned him to come inside. I explained everything that had happened with Dally and Cherry and Johnny. Then I asked if he wanted to meet Cherry.
"But doesn't she live on the other side of town?" asked Soda.
"She's here right now. In my room."
"Oh! Jeez, sorry I took you away from your night. But sure, I'll say hi."
I guided Soda to my room and opened the door.
"Hey, sorry about the wait. But there's someone I'd like you to meet. This is my good friend, Sodapop Curtis." I said to Cherry.
Cherry was sitting cross-legged on my bed, staring at something in the corner of my room. She looked up all of a sudden.
"Oh, you startled me!" She hopped off my bed to go shake hands with Soda. But she didn't shake his hand the way she shook mine. When she shook mine, she was gentle, and she took her time. But with Soda, she grabbed his hand and shook it quickly and roughly. That's weird, I thought, but I didn't think about it too much.
We poured into my room and I closed my door. I sat in the middle of my bed with Cherry on the side with the pillows and Soda near the edge. Cherry went back to starring at the corner of my room.
I asked, "Cherry, why do you keep starring at that corner?" That's when I looked too. And I suddenly regretted asking her.
See, when my brother started spending less and less time at the house, I started going through his stuff. He had a duffel bag with everything he needed, so the rest was pretty much junk. And crusty socks. But one thing, in particular, caught my eye; his collection of Playboy magazines. Not because I'm into girls, but because vintage porn is all the rage. I figured if I kept them for long enough, they'd be worth something eventually. So I took them and put them in the corner of my room, so you really had to look to be able to see them. My brother never found out, and I pretty much forgot about it. Until I just had to draw attention to it.
