Mikey’s POV
There were sounds of screaming and explosions. I was trapped underneath a metal pillar, barely able to move. My blood rushing to my head, I could hardly see. I moved my hand around, I felt a piece of fabric, and slowly moved my hand around it. It was someone’s chest; I could feel the steady rise and fall. Thank God! My vision blurred until it was all black.
Sam’s POV
“Mikey! James! Where are you?” Oh Jesus! Please be alive! Dave and Joe were searching through the rubble behind me.
“Sam! Sam, get over here!” Dave called. Is it them? I ran over to him, sick to my stomach of what we might find. I bent down and help Dave and Joe clear away some rubble. A hand, whose hand? Clearing more and more away we find James; lying on his back, covered in dust. A hand – not James’ – laying across his steadily rising and falling chest. We pulled James out and continued to remove the rubble near the hand. We found him. Mikey also laying on his back but, trapped underneath a metal pillar. Me, Dave and Joe tried to lift the metal pillar, but it was too heavy.
“It’s not working! We’re too weak!” Tears running down my blood and dust covered face.
“Calm down, Sam! We’re going to get him out!” Joe tried to reassure me, but it didn’t work. I broke down. Mikey and I had been friends for years; I don’t know what I’d do without him.
“Joe come here and help me lift this! Sam, pull yourself together and help! Okay, when Joe and I lift this, you pull Mikey out, got it!?” I nodded, wiping the tears from my face. I walked over to Mikey’s body and placed my hands under his armpits.
“Okay, ready?” Joe and I nodded.
“Good. On three. One. Two. Three lift!” Joe and Dave had lifted the metal pillar just high enough for Mikey to get out. I grabbed his underarms and dragged Mikey out.
