Mia’s POV
“Autumn? Please keep up! It’s nearly dark and I would like to find somewhere for us to rest.” I looked back at my friend, her blood and dirt streaked face scrunched up in pain. We’ve been walking for two and a half days, dying of hunger and of thirst; we had been savouring the little resources we had, and we’re steadily running low.
“Where are we, anyway?” Autumn asked.
“We are in Ely, Cambridge. We passed the sign a few hours ago.” I replied a little out of breath from the hill we just climbed. We continued walking for what felt like hours.
We came to a house with a missing door, it looked completely uninhabited, and so we walked to it. The night growing darker and the air growing colder. We walked up to a basement door and tried the handle it was locked and it seemed to be locked from the inside.
“Autumn! I think someone’s in there!” I whispered a twinge of fear in my voice.
“Maybe they can help us!” Autumn whispered back, a little hopeful.
“Or maybe they will eat our eyeballs out!”
“Yeah... that too...”
“Shhh, Autumn. I think someone’s talking. Listen.” We pressed our ears against the door. We never got to hear anything, but there is definitely somebody in there.
We heard lots of clicking and we backed away hiding in the shadows. The door was half opened and heard people talking.
Autumn’s POV
“I think there are some more bottles of water in the cupboard in the living room!” It was a man’s voice, oddly familiar.
“Wait! Dave! I think someone is out there!” Another man whispered his voice also oddly familiar.
“Eh... hello? Is anyone there? We won’t harm you!” The man – Dave – asked uncertainty in his voice. Mia stepped out of the shadows, revealing herself.
“Mia?” I whispered.
“It’s alright, Autumn. Come on.” She said reassuringly.
