If there was one regret Val didn't have, it was helping Harry teach that class. He knew a lot, but she knew a lot more. She was a great asset for them to have. She knew if it wasn't for her teaching them those defensive spells, they wouldn't have made it out of the Department of Mysteries alive. That, and her father alerting Dumbledore of what was happening. He had shown up and helped them. He fought Voldemort himself. And finally, the Ministry caught a glimpse of Voldemort at the last moment. They've accepted that he was back. Fudge resigned, Dumbledore was reinstated, and Harry was no longer vindicated. But, not everyone came out alive. Bellatrix killed Sirius. Harry blamed himself. He wondered, if he'd really devoted himself and tried to learn Occlumency, if he'd never went to the Department of Mysteries that night, if his godfather would still be alive.

As soon as they had all returned to Hogwarts with Dumbledore, Val immediately found them in the Hospital Wing. She helped Madame Pomfrey tend to them, as there were several of them and only one of her. Harry wasn't in there, though. Dumbledore was tending to him himself and he was comforting him. Hermione explained to her everything that happened, about what they did with Umbridge in the Forbidden Forest, how the Department of Mystery was all set up by Voldemort like she'd originally had suspicions about, how the Order showed up to help them, Sirius' death, Dumbledore and Voldemort's fight, and how Voldemort possessed Harry. Val felt awful about Sirius. She knew how much he meant to Harry. The way he spoke about him before, he looked up to him so much. He really was the only family he had left, and now he was gone. Voldemort had truly taken everything from him. As Val listened to her explain everything, she just felt even more guilty. Because she knew this was coming, but she couldn't do anything to help them. Hermione, thinking her father prevented her from coming along, assured her that she'd done enough by helping them learn the spells in the first place. While that was a wonderful consolation, it wasn't enough.

During their last month or so at Hogwarts, Harry met with Dumbledore frequently. His words and some things Luna had said to him made him feel better. He was getting over Sirius' death and coming to terms with it. And he was starting to look up. Instead of feeling so destroyed by his death, he was going to hold on and do everything he can to bring justice to all the lives Voldemort has stripped away from everyone. He looked forward to the future, because he knew what Voldemort didn't have on his side that they did— love. They were all so full of love. They cared deeply about each other. Harry was sure of that because of the way his friends came along with him on such a dangerous mission with no question. And they'd do it again in a heartbeat. They were already eager to do it again, because they were right there with him. They loved their friends and family, the world they lived in, and they wanted to make sure Voldemort was never allowed to take another life. That the world was ridded of him forever. That was enough. That was all the motivation they needed to succeed in the future.

Draco knocked on Val's door a couple of times before just walking in. She stood there, packing her trunk. This was their last night at Hogwarts. He was coming to get her for the end of the year feast. She was just standing there, staring at an item of clothing she'd already folded long ago. She hadn't put it in her trunk yet. She was lost in her thoughts. He came up behind her, brushing his hands through her hair. He knew there was something up with her. She hadn't been her normal self after everything happened. She was quiet, joyless. He hadn't seen her laugh or smile but a few times. She didn't say much when they ate at dinner, or when they all sat together in the Common Room. At this point, she avoided sitting with them in the Common Room all together. She would go straight to her dorm. She would read a book, something to get her mind off things and just take her away from the horrid world she was living in for just a moment. She started writing a lot more again, instead of voicing her feelings. She was starting to go back to her old ways, and Draco wasn't sure why. She wasn't talking to him. They hadn't really spent much time together at all the last month. She was pushing him away, claiming she just wanted to be alone.
