I don't know if you can tell, but recognizing monsters wasn't exactly my thing. I had no idea what Dr. Thorn was. All I knew was that he was fast and also that knowing he was quick didn't really help when it came to narrowing down my list.
Percy and I kept hastily meeting eyes before looking away. I think we both knew that we wouldn't be able to defend ourselves. The spike had been pulled out of my arm and somehow -probably magic related- there wasn't a three inch whole in there. No, it was more like a shallow crater. Believe me though, it still hurt like crazy.
I mean, even if Percy and I were not injured, we still would have the di Angelo siblings to worry about. We'd never be able to defend them while taking on this monster. We needed help, desperately.
"What are you doing, Jackson?" Hissed Dr. Thorn. "Keep moving!"
I looked back to Percy only to see his eyes shut tight. When he finally opened them he seemed a little more panicked.
"It's my shoulder." He said, sounding miserable. "It burns."
"Bah! My poison causes pain. It will not kill you. Walk!"
I sent Percy a concerned glance. He was hurt, I hated seeing him like that. I needed to do something, anything.
Before I knew it though we were outside, and Thorn was marching us into the woods. We took a snowy path dimly lit by old-fashioned lamplights. It was freezing out. Honestly, I thought we would all get frostbite. It probably didn't help that my jacket was still tied around my waste.
"There is a clearing ahead," Thorn said. "We will summon your ride."
"What ride?" Bianca demanded. "Where are you taking us?"
"Silence, you insufferable girl!"
"Don't talk to my sister that way.'" Nico said. His voice quivered, but I was just impressed that he had the guts to say anything at all.
"Why you little-"
In that moment Thorn looked like a leopard in one of those nature documentaries I was forced to watch in history class. He was about to pounce, so I decided it was right about time for me to do something stupid.
I jumped in front of the younger boy and used my non injured arm to push him father behind me.
"Stay away from him!" I shouted. "If you're going to fight anyone, then fight me."
Thorn sent me a chilling glare. "You think you're brave, don't you? Well, I think your just stupid."
I gulped. "Yeah, well a little bit of both goes a long way."
The monster pushed me straight back into Percy, who caught me in an almost hug. His arms oddly wrapping around me. The weird position was probably due to his shoulder.
Dr. Thorn made a growling sound that was pretty darn far away from sounding human. While I tried my best not to show it on my face, the hair on my neck stood straight up.
We continued to walk for what felt like hours but was probably only minutes.
"Halt," Thorn suddenly stopped us.
The woods had opened up. We'd reached a freaky looking cliff that seemed to be overlooking an endless drop. I could fly so height naturally wasn't usually an issue for me. Something about that place though...it creeped me out.
Dr. Thorn pushed us toward the edge. Percy stumbled but before I could do anything, Bianca caught his arm and steded him.
"Thanks," he murmured.
