Wow, I'm a terrible salesman

To be honest, finding out that a twelve year old girl was a goddess didn't phase me as much as it probably should have. I was still kinda in shock, you know from seeing one of my best friends get hurtled off of a cliff. Everything felt wrong. The reality of the situation hadn't yet set in. Annabeth couldn't be dead...she just couldn't be.

The thing that really broke me out of my own head was when Grover hastily got to his knees in the snow.

He started saying, "thank you, Lady Artemis! You're so...you're so...Wow!"

"Get up, goat boy!" Thalia snapped. "We have other things to worry about. Annabeth is gone!"

I turned to her so fast that my hair slapped my cheek.

"She's not gone!" I insisted.

"Really?" I could practically see the anger rippling off of her. "So you didn't just see her fall off the side of the cliff?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Bianca di Angelo interrupted. "Hold up. Time out."

All eyes fell on her. She seemed panicky and was slowly pointing her finger at each one of us. Like she was trying to make it all make sense. "Who...who are you people?"

Artemis's expression softened. "It might be a better question, my dear girl, to ask who are you! Who are your parents?"

Bianca looked over to her brother in concern. He didn't seem worried at all though. Nico was just staring up at the goddess in awe, like a little kid in a toy store.

Our parents are dead," Bianca said. "We're orphans. There's a bank trust that pays for our school, but..."

Her voice trailed off. Maybe she could tell just by all of our expressions that we weren't exactly convinced. Was that how I looked on my first day at camp? All lost and confused?

"What?" She demanded. "I'm telling the truth."

"You are a half-blood," Zoe said in her pretty accent. "One of thy parents was mortal. The other was an Olympian."

"An Olympian...athlete?"

Looking back on it, that was pretty funny. I probably would have laughed if I wasn't so down.

"No," Zoe confirmed. "One of the gods."

"Cool!" Nicos face lit up.

"No!" Bianca's voice quavered. "This is not cool!"

Nico started to do a little dance, bouncing around on his toes. "Does Zeus really have lightning bolts that do six hundred damage? Does he get extra movement points for—"

"Nico, shut up!" Bianca hid her face behind her hands. "This is not your stupid Mythomagic game, okay? There are no gods!"

For a moment my anxiousness for Annabeth slightly subsided and it was overpowered by a strong feeling of sympathy towards the di Angelos. At least for Bianca. Their whole world is getting turned upside down and they didn't really get leaned into it or anything. It was just poof major battle.

Thalia had to have been feeling the same way, because a little bit of the rage died down in her eyes. "Bianca, I know it's hard to believe. But the gods are still around. Trust me. They're immortal. And whenever they have kids with regular humans, kids like us, well...Our lives are dangerous."

"Dangerous," Bianca said. "Like the girl who fell."

I physically tensed as Thalia turned away. Heck, even Artemis looked saddened.

"Do not despair for Annabeth," the goddess said. "She was a brave maiden. If she can be found, I shall find her."

I didn't like how she talked about Annabeth in the past tense. Like you would talk about your great grandma who died ages ago.
