Romeo and Juliet is waaay more depressing than I remembered

The helicopter was already fully in our view by the time we made it onto the free-way. The thing was jet black, just like the one we had seen at that military school. The worst part of our situation though wasn't it's appearance, it was the fact that the helicopter seemed to be following us like a hawk.

"They know the van," Percy said, looking upward. "We have to ditch it."

As Zoe swerved like a crazy person into the fast lane, I got roughly pushed up against Percy. Somehow I always ended up in the middle seat, getting tossed around like a ping pong ball every time we were in a fast moving vehicle. To be fair though, most of the time we didn't exactly buckle up preparing for a high speed chase.

I quickly moved myself away and let out a sigh. "Great idea Percy. You couldn't have come up with it before we started driving?"

"I'm just trying to be helpful." He exclaimed.

I shook my head. "Well what do you want us to do, Percy? Take turns jumping out and hoping we don't get run over?"

Percy met my eyes.

"Well I don't think it's the worst plan." He admitted.

I stared on at him in complete shock. "I was being sarcastic, Percy...Obviously if we actually jumped out we would at least pull out onto the normal lane first."

Thalia let out an audible groan from the passenger seat. "Grover, can you get the married couple back there to stop bickering? We're trying to focus."

Percy and I both sent each other puzzled looks and he mouthed, 'Married couple?'

In the end neither of us had time to continue our conversation. The helicopter had gotten closer, scarily closer. If we didn't make a move soon...

"Maybe the military will shoot it down," Grover suggested hopefully.

"The military probably thinks it's one of theirs," Percy said. "How can the General use mortals, anyway?"

"Mercenaries," Zoe said bitterly. "It is distasteful, but many mortals will fight for any cause as long as they are paid."

"But don't these mortals see who they're working for?" Percy asked. "Don't they notice all the monsters around them?"

Zoe just shook her head. "I do not know how much they see through the Mist. I doubt it would matter to them if they knew the truth. Sometimes mortals can be more horrible than monsters."

With those words I suddenly thought back to Mr. Myers. Maybe before I wouldn't have agreed with Zoe, maybe I wouldn't have seen her point. Now though...I think I understood what she was saying.

Thalia closed her eyes and prayed hard. "Hey, Dad. A lightning bolt would be nice about now. Please?"

The sky didn't so much as darken.

"Yeah, Thalia...I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this but our dad's kinda a major jerk." I admitted.

She turned back to me. "Stop talking...Wait, actually keep going. Maybe you'll get his attention."

Bianca's eyes went a little wide. "And I thought I had a dysfunctional family."

I just sighed. The poor girl probably didn't even know the half of what she had gotten herself into. It was still hard for me to wrap my mind around her making the decision to become a hunter. I mean, there was always the whole thing with her brother but also...she had just found out about the gods being real not even a few hours prior. I had been a part of this world for years by this point and I still had trouble processing some elements. Did she even really know what her choice meant?
