Today is Thursday and I believe Stijn will be coming in for his second day. Yesterday was the usual work day and I did everything that was asked of me. I had a whole day to prepare myself for this moment and as always, I have played every possible conversations in my head.
That is actually a good advice to anyone out there who is anxious about meeting someone. Just imagine possible conversations in your head and prepare a good response to it. It is a little bit obsessive if you really think about it but I have been doing that for a long time now, and most of the time it works for me so I just went with it.
If Stijn brings up our past, I have a response ready for it. If he acts professionally and he doesn't bring anything about our past, then I would have another response prepared for it. If for some reason he is angry and says something bad about me, I will just shut up and ignore him. He is still my boss and I don't want to lose my job on my fourth day. The latter has a lesser chance of happening since I don't think Stijn is that person but who knows, he might have changed.
As I anxiously tap on my desk, I watched my coworkers do their reports and call their client from time to time. I hear John getting frustrated during his call so I asked him what that was all about. He says that he was trying for weeks to get one of the biggest engineering firms to work with us.
He continues to say that some clients are really hard to get and I need to be patient with them or else, they will drop you. He was on the verge of closing the deal when they backed out at the last minute because they had to double check again the contract and that was what got John so riled up. He advised me to never argue with your clients even if I am right because that would make the clients more doubtful about the deal. I am not sure that is the best advice but I will keep it in mind.
While John and I were talking about his client, I noticed in my peripheral vision that our boss just came in. He went straight to his office. Joana interrupted us and instructed me to go ask our boss if he needs anything from me since I finished all my work. And here I thought Joana should be the first person to report to him. Hmm, I think Joana is trying to test the waters first and check how our boss deals with other people in the morning. So I am her test subject? Clever woman.
So I mustered all the strength that I have and went to his office with my pen and notepad hoping that this will be a quick conversation. I knocked on his door and proceeded when I heard him say come in.
I greeted him "Good morning sir. I am here as instructed by Joana to assist you with your day to day work. Is there anything that I can prepare for you now?" I said without stuttering. Wow Colton, you were able to see straight through his eyes. He really didn't change that much aside from his stubble which just made him sexier.
He replied "Well, there is one thing that I would like you to prepare but you would have to do that in the bathroom. Would you like that Mr. Cowell?"
I was stunned. Gobsmacked. Insulted? Like how could he say that in his office right in front of my face? I mean he probably can because it is his office and he is my boss but still. Out of all the conversations that I played in my head, this is what he said? I did not expect that, at all.
He noticed that I was a bit shocked with what I said. I can't seem to come up with a reply.
He just smiled and said "don't worry Colton, we will get to that soon. For now, you can just prepare for the financial reports for the clients that I am about to meet later. I will email you the details. You may go now."
For some reason I can't seem to move as I was still processing what he said earlier when I heard him say my name again.
"Colton, you can go now. I will call you if I need anything. And please ask Joana and Logan, the other team leader, to come to my office as soon as they are free," he instructed while he took his seat and looked at all the documents on his desk.
