Chapter 36 ~Wylan~

"Did he get home okay?" Jesper asked staring at the newly appeared forest in front of us.

"I'm going to say yes." I nodded.

We stood in silence for a minute.

"So the threat is over, right?" Jesper asked.

"From what I can gather."

"But the forest is still here, and so are the inferni...?"

I looked at Jesper with wide eyes. "Oh, shit."

We took off running out of the forest. When we reached the edge of the woods, we found Kaz, Nina, and Inej with ten unconscious men lying around them.

"You did all that?" I asked bewildered.

"The creepy bird helped." Nina said pointing to the raven pecking at the unconscious inferni.

"That's still here?" Jesper asked. "I thought it would disappear when Ronan left."

"Ronan's gone?" Kaz asked.

"Apparently." Jesper agreed.

Nina looked at us with narrowed eyebrows. "What does that mean?"

Jesper smiled at her and slung an arm around her shoulder. "Oh Nina, do we have a wacked out experience to share with you." He looked over his shoulder and smiled at me. "Our place?"

My heart surged at the words. We'd always called it the Van Eck mansion, it felt good to claim it as ours finally. I smiled back at him. "Sounds fantastic."

Jesper led the way as we started back towards the city.

I walked beside Inej as went and once we were clear of the woods I asked her, "Do you have any room in your operation for a little help?"

Inej fought down a smile. "What does that mean?"

I looked at Jesper, then at the bag of bombs slung over my chest, and finally, I smiled at Inej. "Being a merchant is boring. Me and Jesper were looking for something to occupy us on the weekends."

Inej let her smile spread on her face and rested a hand on my shoulder. "I'd love your help."

I thanked her and when I noticed that Jesper was looking back at the two of us, I made a point of saying, "Looking forward to doing business with you."

He looked at me like he'd just gotten the best hand in Three Man Bramble.
