Chapter 9

The four were still walking while Donkey continued blabbing.

" You know what everybody else likes?
Parfaits. Have you ever met a person, you say, "hey let's get some parfait," they say "hell no I don't like parfait." Parfaits are delicious!" Donkey said causing Shrek to lose.

" NOOO! YOU DENSE, IRRITATING, MINIATURE BEAST OF BURDEN! Ogres are not like onions! End of story. Bye-bye. See ya later." Shrek finished before walking off. Kobe and Max looked at Shrek shocked with what he just said to Donkey. They shrugged it off and moved on. Donkey was momentarily speechless before he started talking again.

" Do you have a tissue or something? I'm making a mess. Just the word parfait make me start slobbering." Donkey said before following the others.

(Time skip)
All four reached DuLoc countryside towards the dragon's keep. They moved across a burnt landscape marked by charred trees. Donkey, Kobe and Max weren't liking this one bit.

" Ohh! Shrek! Did you do that? You gotta warn somebody before you just crack one off. My mouth was open and everything." Donkey said after he sniffed.

" Believe me, Donkey, if it was me, you'd be dead." Shrek started before he stopped and sniffed.

" it's brimestone, we must be getting close." Shrek finished as Kobe was getting chills from walking closely to the Dragon's keep. Max was hugging Kobe on the neck. She noticed it and softly purred on his head. Max smiled a bit.

" Yeah, right, brimstone. Don't be talking about it's the brimstone. I know what I smell. It wasn't no brimstone. It didn't come off no stone neither."
Donkey said in disgust.

A huge 'devil's peak' rised above them. Dark clouds scudded across the sky, forboding. The four pulled themselves up and looked. The dragon's keep stood before them. A dilapidated castle, burned and blackened, perched on a rock pinnacle over a lake boiled molten lava.

" Sure. It's big enough, but look at the location." Shrek said looking up at the tower.

" I don't know about this Shrek!" Kobe whispered as she was shaking in fear.

" Come on we're only gonna save the princess. Besides it'll be fine." Shrek assured Kobe.

" I know I'm just afraid that the Dragon might eat us or something." Kobe said still shaking.

" Whatever let's just keep going." Shrek said as they started walking towards the bridge. Donkey stared at the chasm then gingerly trotted after the trio.

" Uh Shrek? Remember when you said that-that ogres had layers." Donkey stuttered a little.

" Oh, aye?" Shrek responded.

" Well, I have a bit of a confession to make." Donkey said causing Kobe and Max to look at him confused. They came upon a skull horse impaled on a bridge at a eye level and started. Kobe was freaked out by the skull and felt like vomiting.

" Donkeys don't have layers. We-we wear our fear right out there on our sleeves." Donkey stuttered a little. He cane level with the trio at the foot of the bridge.

" Wait a second. Donkeys don't have sleeves." Shrek stated.

" You know what I mean." Donkey said in fear.

" You can't tell me you're afraid of heights?" Shrek said. Kobe started to become scared too when she looked at the bottom of bridge.

" I'm with him Shrek! I'm afraid of heights!!" Kobe exclaimed causing Max to hide inside her shirt as he was afraid too. Shrek noticed him hiding.

" Oh come on you three!" Shrek exclaimed after she said that. Donkey peered over tentatively over the edge.

" No, we're just a little uncomfortable about being on a rickety bridge over a boiling like of lava!" Donkey said fearfully. Kobe had tears in her eyes at the moment.

" Come on guys. I'm right beside you three, okay? For... emotional support.
We'll just tackle this thing together one little baby step at a time okay." Shrek said calmly.

" Really?" Kobe and Donkey asked at the same time.

" Really really." Shrek assured them.

" Okay. That makes me feel so much better." Donkey said hesitantly.

" Me too." Kobe said hesitantly as well.
Donkey was the first to step out onto the bridge. Shrek, Kobe and Max followed. Donkey picked his way among the flimsy stats.

" Just keep moving and don't look down." Shrek told them. Kobe hesitated not to look down. So did Max.

" Okay, don't look down. Don't look down. Don't look down. Keep on moving. Don't look down." Donkey muttered to himself.

" Say that too much and we'll get even more scared!!" Kobe snapped as she was shaking. She was starting to sweat.
Donkey stepped on a slat that gives way and dropped into the boiling molt. He couldn't help but see through the opening.

" Shrek! I'm looking down! AAAH!!" Donkey yelled as he startled Kobe. He started sling around the bridge in place causing Kobe and Max to get even more scared.

" God, I can't do this! Just get us off right now, please!" Donkey pleaded.

" Yeah me and Max can't do this either Shrek." Kobe sobbed.

" But you three are already halfway." Shrek said as he started to get irritated.

" But we know that half is safe!" Max exclaimed pointing at the other side of the bridge they came from.

" Okay, fine. I don't have time for this. You three go back!" Shrek ordered.
He tried to get past the three animals but the bridge was too narrow. As they struggled, the bridge started to struggle and sway.

" Shrek! What are you doing?!!" Kobe asked frightfully.

" Shrek! No. Wait." Donkey said in fear.

" Come on you three, let's have a dance then, shall we? Come on." Shrek said as he started shaking the bridge. The three animals jumped back over the missing board.

" AHH!! Don't do that!!" Donkey exclaimed.

The three animals started backing away from Shrek, in the direction Shrek wanted them to go. Shrek saw an opportunity.

" What? This?" Shrek asked as he started to shake the bridge again.

" Yes! That!" Max exclaimed in fear.

" Yes? Yes. Do it. Okay." Shrek said as he started shaking the bridge causing the three animals to start backing further across in terror. Shrek propelled the trio step by step. They started screaming in terror.

" AHH!! NO, SHREK!! NO!!! STOP IT!! STOP!!" Kobe screeched as she started bawling.

" YOU THREE SAID 'DO IT'. I'M DOING IT!!" Shrek shouted over Kobe's plea.

" Oh, God! We're gonna die! We're gonna die! We're gonna die! Shrek, we're gonna die!" Donkey exclaimed.

As they started screaming with their eyes closed, they started to back up unaware that they're on the other side of the bridge. Their eyes popped open and they looked down at the solid ground. Kobe breathed a sigh of relief.
Max peeped out of Kobe's shirt. And looked around. He breathed a sigh of relief as well.

" Oooh." Donkey said as he looked around. Shrek leaned in and patted Donkey on the cheek.

" That'll do Donkey. That'll do." Shrek said smiling. He then started to pet Kobe in the head making her purr sweetly. They looked back over at the bridge then at Shrek.

" Cool." Donkey said.

" Shouldn't we get going?" Asked Kobe as the males nodded their heads in agreement. They all walked towards the enormous castle doors.
