P.o.v Shikamaru
Nervous is an understatement of what I felt.
It was last year that Naruto and I had become engaged and started living together.
The entire year was the best of my life. Not a moment was wasted with him always by my side. That big, goofy grin was the best thing I've ever woken up to.
Now, standing in Kakashi sensei's, or Lord Hokage's office, hand in hand with my fiance, we're finally getting the verdict; the news we've been waiting for.
Naruto squeezes my hand, as if I'm the one who needs to be comforted.
'What would I be doing without that idiot,' I've asked myself this a lot lately.
"I have two things to say," Kakashi says without his normally bored tone.
"First off, Congratulations Naruto Uzumaki. You are now the seventh Hokage. You've trained and awaited this moment for your entire life, and I'm glad to have been your teacher and guide you in the right direction."
I'm shocked, even though I knew this was coming.
I turn my head and look at Naruto, expecting him to be jumping for joy or making a mess of the office.
What I find is him looking back at me with a soft smile. His eyes say, "Look at me, Shikamaru. I did it."
I return his smile.
Kakashi clears his throat, getting out attention once again.
"Secondly, this part is more for the both of you."
"Your marriage has been approved, you can start picking your theme and decorations right away. Again, Congratulations. I wish the best to the both of you. That is all."
This is what breaks me. I start tearing up on the spot.
Those girls at the Academy, the grown-ups, the ninja from other villages. They didn't know what they were saying when they said Naruto was a loser, a freak, that he wouldn't ever be Hokage.
Just look where we are now.
Naruto deserves this more than anyone in the world, and I will do whatever it takes to help him be the best Hogake the world has ever seen.
I only wish Asuma sensei could be here to see us now.
As we stand, in each other's arms, Naruto in his new Hokage outfit, looking out over our forever home, I'm glad I kissed him that day in that stupid, cramped closet.
This was meant to be.
"I love you."
