Chapter 1

P.o.v: Shikamaru

I heave a loud sigh. Today's as boring as any average day for me, there's nothing to do. Although, everyday is pretty average for me. I'm an average guy, with average ninja missions, an average family, and average friends, who happens to love cloud watching.

Laying back and staring at the sky is all this guy could ask for.

As a matter of fact, that's what I'm currently doing. Sitting in my favorite spot in the village, watching a thunder cloud float by. There's a cool breeze in the air, not so cold as to give you chills, but refreshing.

Smiling, I look to my left, the very spot I met Choji Akimichi, my best friend. That day was a good day, similar to today. Something about him seemed different, and I wanted to figure out what it was.

A very troublesome question indeed.

Thoughts of my chubby companion bring me back to my first mission as a chunin, a squad leader. A frown plasters itself over my features.

I failed to rescue Sasuke Uchiha, a ninja who left the village with the Sound Four, headed for the Hidden Sound village, Orochimaru's territory.

Every member of my squad was injured on that mission.

Naruto had small injuries, but his loss of the battle with Sasuke was due to being chakra deprived. Kiba and Akamaru had serious, but not life threatening injuries. Choji and Neji, now they were a different story.

One minute later had they been rescued, they wouldn't be here. One false move from a medical ninja, dead.

Each and every one of them were fighting tooth and nail to bring him back, and I'm proud of them.

Except we failed. I'm to blame for this mess. Hell, I came out with only a broken finger! Sand ninja had to come to our rescue, because I'm such a pitiful leader.

I know it isn't directly my fault, but I can't help but blame myself for it anyway.

"What a drag," I sigh, continuing to sulk in my self pity.

I didn't even realize he was there until he was up in my face, yelling "Shikamaru, hello?!"
