Random thoughts on closed species

DISCLAIMER: NOT AIMED AT ANYONE OR ANY SPECIES IN PARTICULAR. DO NOT TAKE THIS PERSONALLY.

Closed species are always the more original ones... The ones that make you want your own... But the only way to get them is adopts...

I see the reasoning behind it, it's very rational. For one thing, it keeps people from copying. It also prevents people from making ridiculous Mary-Sue all-the-rare-features OCs of them...

But there's something that annoys me about them. For one, I'm someone who likes making original OCs. I'm not a fan of adopts. And with adopts I feel like I'm taking away from others. Especially DTAs. And I'm not one to design crazy OCs. I prefer balanced OCs and so usually go for common features.

Then again, I'm sure I could just go make my own species if I wanted to make something original. But some closed species are so cool... Again, I see that it's to protect originality and I'm fine with that. I understand that point of view. I guess I'm just annoyed at the fact that there's so many closed species and so little adopts that fit my tastes. Oh well...

My mindset in itself is relatively open-species oriented. I like it when other people make Fuzzets and Cave Drakes. Rare features, however, are CLOSED. To me, that keeps me in control of the species, keeping them my own.

That kinda goes with my approach to fanfics. I don't really spend the time writing all my fanfiction ideas down, but I like to stay in the zone of "it could've happened without changing the story's canon, the main characters weren't there, and the world wasn't at stake"

Agh whatever... Closed species are closed species, if I'm not happy with the adopts then I don't have to get one.

End of random thoughts. If anyone thinks this was addressed at them for whatever reason, it's probably a coincidence. Just kinda venting built-up frustration of not liking adopts of closed species over time.

I understand why species are closed and I agree with a lot of it. I'll be fine. I have enough originality in my head to make my own darn species if I want.
