Chapter 6: Silence with Sound
Miriam's POV:
17th CenturyHis hands were cold but there was a warmth to it. I clutched his hands and I walked out. The first thing I saw was his eyes. They were so blue and so lonely with a deep silence. Silence have secrets, his eyes were something, unlike anything I had ever seen. However, those eyes spoke more than what I could hear. It wasn't right for me to stare yet I was captured. He was frozen there standing and I don't how long have I stared at his eyes, but the spell was broken as soon as he lifted my veil. I screamed as I realized that a stranger had dared to lift my veil. What was wrong with me how could I have been so lost? How could I look at another man, after David? I moved away as I removed my hands from his hands'. He backed off as in fear but his eyes were still locked on mine. A man called out from the back but without glancing at him the stranger ran.
"Nathanial! Nathanial!" I turned around to see an old man screaming and running toward me as the stranger ran away. So the stranger's name was Nathanial. The old man approached me and greeted. "I am sorry I don't know what got into Nathanial, he isn't like this dear. Lady Clarkson said you will be arriving and I was in charge to escort you. My name is Manson by the way. I will take you to Lady Clarkson." Manson coughed as he finished talking. He seemed out of breath. I nodded my head in response and followed behind him. I didn't know what I was supposed to do. I thought Great Aunt Clarkson would be greeting me but I guess she wasn't able to get off of her bed. However, I never expected something like this. I followed Manson behind and followed him in toward the house.
As I entered the house Manson took me up the stairs and stopped near a room which was closed by wooden doors. "Lady Clarkson is behind those doors. You should meet her and let her know that you have arrived. The room next to her over there is yours. I will be leaving now." Manson finished as he walked away leaving me standing outside Great aunt Jenifer's room. I pushed open the doors and allowed myself in.
At the far end of the room, there was a bed, Great Aunt Jenifer was resting there on the bed. I made my way toward the bed and stood by her side. Great Aunt Jenifer opened her eyes and smiled when she saw me. She looked really sick and old but her smile still showed strength.
"Dear Miriam, I hope your journey was alright and you had no problem arriving." Great Aunt Jenifer said as she began to cough. I recalled the incident that took place outside a few moments ago but I decided not to tell her. It would be disrespectful if I complain to her when she was this kind enough to offer me a home in the state I am in. "How is the child, I know it hasn't been long since you married and all this happened and then David died. What can one do when the Lord has written one's fate? You are my sister's granddaughter and I really don't have a close relationship with you besides that, but I took you in because you are carrying a child." Great aunt Jenifer coughed as she finished talking.
"I couldn't have been more thankful to have your help. Lord has sent you when I had no one. I will always and forever be thankful to you." I said as Great Aunt Jenifer smiled and told me to leave and get some rest. I walked out of her room and closed the doors behind me. I walked into the room next to hers and opened the door to walk into my new room.
