I groaned, still more than half asleep, as I rolled over the side of my four poster bed and quietly hit the floor. The stone floor was cold and shocked me into immediate wakefulness as I scrambled back into my warm bed and wrapped the covers around my shoulders. I looked around the empty room, wondering what had woken me up.

The late summer sun was shining brightly in the windows and every bed that surrounded me was neatly made, my dorm mates nowhere to be seen. I glanced at the clock and frowned, it was nearly time for lunch and yet I felt as if I hadn't slept for more than half an hour. I couldn't remember the exact time I finished my potions essay and crawled to bed, but I do remember that the sky had started to lighten.

A loud screech alerted me to the presence that had caused me to fall out of bed in the first place. A large horned owl sat perched on the end of my bed, its glowing yellow gaze fixed squarely on me. It its beak was a fancy scribbled letter that was sealed with a large glob of purple wax. I stared at it for a moment, confused.

The letter was clearly from my mother but the owl wasn't one I recognized. I groggily scrambled to the edge of the bed, nearly dropping my plushy but I managed to snatch him out of thin air before he could hit the dirty ground. I snuggled the blue and purple horse under my chin as I gave the owl a dirtier look. It screeched again, impatient, as I stopped my attempt to grab the letter.

As soon as it was relieved of its burden, the horned owl flew over to one of the windows that I hadn't previously noticed was open. With a bit of intelligent maneuvering, it used its beak to further the gap and fly off into the late morning sky. I scowled down at the letter as I contemplated just ignoring it completely. Chances were very likely that it said nothing of importance as my mother rarely felt like sharing or demanding anything of me.

However my curiosity was stronger than my sense of disinterest as I ripped the letter open and quickly read the words. I was right, nothing important. She was simply explaining that she and my father would be taking an extended stay in America to help the MACUSA investigate something or other. They would be gone at least until after the Christmas holidays. She wished me a splendid birthday, a happy Christmas and a bright new year.

I rolled my eyes and tossed the letter into my trunk as I rose to dress for the day. It was a little chilly but not too cold so I dressed in tight fitting dark jeans and a large fluffy knitted sweater. I pulled my dark hair into a loose braid that hung over my shoulder and took a few moments to do my makeup. I wasn't big into the whole face makeup that looked like a really wonderful and beautiful mask, but I did enjoy at least emphasizing my eyes with winged eyeliner. My skin was naturally fair and my complexion remarkably unblemished, aside from a spattering of freckles over the apples of my cheeks and nose.

I stuck my wand behind my ear and made my bed, tucking my plushy, whose name was Mang, into the pocket of my jeans. It was a stupid gamble on my part, adding an Undetectable Extension Charm to all of the pockets in my robes and pants, but one I was willing to take. I learned my first year at Hogwarts that the girls in my dorm could be vicious and cruel, targeting Mang just because I couldn't sleep without him. I could be expelled but as long as he was safe, I didn't rightly care.
