"What ended up happening with Charlie?" Laney asked as we ate lunch.
"He stayed over obviously, you saw that. He wants to prove to me he's not that guy. He wants to be with me and be happy with me," I said looking down.
"And why is that a bad thing?" She asked confused.
"I don't want to get hurt again," I said.
"I know I'm not the biggest fan of him right now, but as I was walking home from the party I found him. Crying," She said as my head shot up.
"Crying?"
"He went on and on about how he never intended on hurting you. That his ex was always like this. She would ruin everything for him when he wanted out. He said he's been doing this for 2 years with her. Every time he has tried to get out, she won't let him," She says looking at me intently.
"I just don't know what to trust at this point," I say running a hand through my hair. "Or if I even want to give him another chance. I have never felt the way I did at the party. I felt so stupid. like I had left my guard down just for it to be put back up,"
"Beck, I understand that. Trust me, I do. But, he obviously wants to make things right with you, why won't you give him a chance?" She says as I just stare at her,
Sure, I wanted to give him another chance, but there was that possibility of him hurting me again.
"I don't know, Laney," I dragged out, unsure of what I was even feeling.
All I knew was that I was hurt and I wasn't quick to forgive him.
The little cafe was busier than usual this Monday afternoon. College students, high school students, and adults all were scattered around the building enjoying their coffee. I noticed a familiar face in the back, that being Adrianna. I ducked my head, not wanting her to see me. What if Charlie had been lying and he never actually broke up with her? I had been thinking about so much the past 24 hours, I didn't know what to believe.
"What's wrong?" Laney asked as she saw the panicked look on my face.
"She's here," I said.
I shouldn't be panicking right now, but when you've been sleeping with someone else's boyfriend you'd be panicking too.
"Who?"
"Adrianna," I said.
"Is that her?" She asked, discreetly turning around.
I nod my head, not taking my eyes off her. She was pretty. She had long blonde hair and the bluest eyes that you could easily get lost in. I see why Charlie dated her, she was irresistible. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I pinched my eyes closed, stopping me from crying. The events of the day before were brought to today and it was just too much. I got up from my seat and bolted out of the coffee shop, leaving Laney behind.
Tears streamed down my face as I walked the sidewalks towards my apartment. Everything was just getting too much for me and I couldn't take it in there any longer. The breeze hit my face, making the tears sting my face a little.
"Beckett!" A voice called from behind me, making me turn around quickly.
I was brought face to face with Charlie as I quickly wiped the tears away with the sleeve of my sweater.
"What's wrong, babydoll?" He asked, obviously concerned.
"Nothing,' I said lowly.
"Beckett, you've been crying," He said placing a hand on my cheek, wiping away the remaining tears.
"I'm okay," I said trying to convince him and myself as well.
"No, youre not," He said looking at me sympathetically.
"Charlie, I'm fine. I promise,"
"I'm coming back with you," He said as he grabbed my hand.
He obviously wouldn't have taken no for an answer, so I just nodded as we walked towards the apartment building. I wanted to forgive him, trust me I did, but something in my body told me not to. That 'once a cheater, always a cheater,' But, If he wasn't with her while we were together was he really cheating though? I didn't know if I should believe him or believe her.
"What's going on in that pretty little head of yours?" He asked as we continued walking.
"A lot," I managed to get out.
"Talk to me, babydoll," He said stopped and taking my face into his hands again.
"There's just so much," I said, my eyes never leaving his.
"I've got the time," He said smiling at me.
"I just am having such a hard time believing you, Charlie," I said as his face drops. "Why would Adrianna have lied about that?"
"Because she's crazy," He chuckled as I gave him a look. "I'm serious, Beckett. She was infatuated with me. She wouldn't ever leave me alone for more than 5 minutes. I tried to break up with her a while ago too, with no luck. She didn't believe that I could actually break up with her. Even though I was so unhappy, I wouldn't dare cheat on her. I'm not that kind of guy,"
I looked at him, perplexed. I still couldn't tell if I could believe him.
"It's going to take some time for me to believe you, Charlie," I said looking at my hands that were still in his.
"That's okay," He said moving my chin so I was looking at him. "I will do everything I can for you to trust me again. I would never hurt you intentionally, Beckett. I know we've only known each other a short amount of time, but I've never felt a connection like I do with you. If you'd give me another chance, I will prove to you that I'm not that guy,"
"Okay," Was all I said as his face lit up.
He looked at me and smiled before bringing me into a bone-crushing hug. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a good idea or not, but I knew I had to give him the benefit of the doubt. He has been nothing but good to me.
But, was I going to regret this?
