Chapter 13: Beautiful Places

Dylan sat outside looking into the body of water, lost in thought.

Lost in sorrow.

His eyes held unshed tears.

"This was your favorite place." He said to himself then turned to the other wooden chair.

"Dad?"

He shook his head.

He was again pretending he was there.

"Dad why am I mad at you when it was not your fault?"

One single tear betrayed him.

"why do you think I would be ok. Why did you make me promise things I didn't want to do?"

He didn't like traveling to Washington, his memories ranged from happy to sad.

He missed his father even more when he was home.

Scatter memories played before him.

Dylan remembered he sat with him every day to enjoy the view of the canal and later play rock skipping. Mr. Wang had a strong arm and managed to find the perfect flat stone to bounce to the surface several times making him the game's ultimate champion.

Another memory of Dylan riding his bike around the rotary park and running along Clear Creek until it was time to head home. He did not need a watch to take time. Once the irrigation of the abandoned farmhouse prayed it meant it was time to go home.  Soon after the skies turned gray.

Dylan was never allowed to be a child during his orphanage and foster home days.

He had too much apprehension, too many insecurities.

He only begins to feel like a child at the age of ten when his parents had shown him kindness and love. He allowed himself to dream and feel normal then.

His parents had opened their hearts and arms to him, he felt protected, he began to live.

10 years later he had a wonderful relationship with his parents, but specially his dad.

Mr. Wang was a retired NBA coach. He had retired to coach the kids at his elementary school.

When Dylan met Mr. Wang, he was in the process of moving back to Washington and settling down with his wife. No more on the road life, he wanted a home.

He had fallen in love with the home. He did not think twice to have everyone move from L.A. to his beloved Silverdale.

Dylan had gone from the big city to a picturesque town. The changes had heeled his anxiety, given him a sense of belonging, and the freedom to be a child.

The night that everything changed was when Dylan moved to attend the University of California. He was skillful in the basketball court and the NBA has drafted him at 19.

His father and uncle were beyond proud, he would spend his vacations at home back in Silverdale and attended school and practice in L.A.

At his 20th birthday he had a major game. He was becoming the talk of the town with his handsome face and his basketball techniques.

His parents had arrived slightly late which made Dylan upset. His father offered to go with him first and have his mom meet them there after the second half of the game.

Grace had stayed and probably survived because of that simple choice.

His father has tried to drive as fast as he could, but the L.A. traffic was hell. They had been stuck on the opposite side of the road when a car out of control met them head on and his father on impulse lounged himself to protect Dylan with his body.
