When nighttime comes and you're alone there's no way to avoid your thoughts. Demons in the dark...Dylan tossed and turned on his bed clenching his hands unable to wake up. Something was holding him back, the same nightmare that had tormented him for years.
He suddenly turned and fell right off the bed; he had only slept a few hours. His brow sweaty and his heart agitated. He sat on the floor for a few minutes. The clock read 10:30 pm. He always tried to go to bed early on Sundays to be ready the next day for a weeks' worth of training. He was a dedicated athlete, always trying to better his game.
Dylan's adoptive mother always said, basketball was the only thing that had saved him. He found joy, and meaning to his life when he discovered basketball. It was something he could do and do well.
Dylan grew up as an orphan until the age of 10 when he was adopted. His adoptive father happened to be the coach at his school's basketball team. His adoptive father had tried to get him into sports because of his height and his interest for Basketball. Dylan pretended he liked it to please his parents. He just wanted to be the perfect child. In the back of his mind he feared of being back to foster care.
The Wang's loved him, yet Dylan had issues letting his guard down. It took him about a year to fully let himself love his parents.
When Dylan was 20 a terrible accident had taken his father from him. His life changed completely, from being protected by his parents to having to protect his mother.
He had blamed himself of that accident. He always thought what if he would not have rushed his father to get to the game on time, would he still be alive? He saw his father die right in front of him and he was not able to do a thing to save him.
Before dying his father made him promise to continue playing basketball, and to please stay by his mother's side, she was going to need him. His father was a kind man who had given him a second chance in life.
After spending several years talking to psychologist about his loss, he never was able to recuperate. For his mother's peace of mind, he lied about feeling better. He had nightmares of his father's bloody face. He felt angry, he did not understand why his father had to died. Dylan would have given anything to exchange places. He hated his life, and he hated himself for not being able to help him when he had done everything for him. The only thing that kept Dylan going was the promises he made to his father, and the beautiful connection he had with Grace, his mother.
