(Alexis' POV)
"You found him?" Dad asks.
"Uh, huh," I nod, slightly nervous to what his reaction will be.
"Oh, thank God." Dad pulls me into a tight hug before sobbing into my shoulder.
I freeze as he continues to cry. What is so heartbreaking about me finding my mate?
"Um, Dad?"
"I'm sorry, Lex," Dad mumbles as he wipes his tears with the sleeve of his shirt. "I'm just so happy you found him. I was so scared that you wouldn't find your mate before you had to mate Coby. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy but he wants to mate you for all the wrong reasons."
"So you're not upset that I won't be mated to Coby?"
"Alexis, baby, I'm delighted that you're not going to be mated to him. I love you more than anything in the world and the fact that you've found your mate has me over the moon!"
"Thanks, Dad," I smile, throwing my arms around him.
He wraps his arms around my waist, before whispering; "I love you, Alexis. So much."
"I love you too, Dad."
After a minute or so, we break apart. "So, tell me about your mate. What's he like?"
"He's amazing, Dad. He's handsome, kind, caring. He's everything I could ever ask for in a mate."
"That's great, honey," Dad smiles. "What pack is he in?"
"He's, eh, he's not in a pack."
"What? He's a rogue?"
"No." I take a deep breath before continuing. "He's a human."
"Oh."
"I was shocked too when I realized, Dad. But he's amazing. Plus, he saved my life."
"He saved your life. How?"
"Remember that day I went missing?"
He nods at me to continue, an underlying emotion in his eyes.
"Leo's friend-" Dad cuts me off.
"Leo's your mate?" he asks. I nod my head in reply. "Okay, continue."
"Leo's friend found me in the woods after the rogues attacked me."
Dad's fists clench in anger but he nods at me to continue once more.
"He brought me to Leo, who runs a veterinary clinic in the nearby town. Leo treated me and looked after me for the few hours that I was out."
"You allowed yourself to be treated like an animal?" Rage is clear in Dad's voice though I can tell he's doing the best he can to control it.
"Dad, I didn't have an option. I would have died if Leo hadn't operated on me. He saved me and I'm glad he did because I never would have met him."
Dad runs his hand through his hair. "I'm sorry. It's just a lot to take in." I give him a harsh look at which he winces at. "I guess I asked for that, one."
We sit in silence for a few minutes before Dad's stomach rumbles loudly.
"Hungry?" I ask with a smile.
"Starving. I haven't eaten since yesterday morning," he admits.
"What? Why not?"
"I was worried about you."
"Dad," I groan. "You can't just stop eating because you're worried about me. Go do some Pack Warrior work and I'll make you some dinner."
"Okay." He stands up and as he reaches the door he turns back to face me when I call his name. "Yeah?"
"I'll be going out while you're eating, okay?"
"Why? Where are you going?"
A smile breaks out on my face as I reply. "I'm going on a date with Leo."
Dad looks at me with pride shining in his eyes. "You go have a shower. I'll look after myself while you get yourself ready."
"Are you sure?" He nods in response. I jump up and kiss him on the cheek. "Thanks, Dad!" I shout as I race up the stairs.
After a quick ten minute shower, I blow dry my hair before putting it into one long French braid. I glance at the clock and notice I only have twenty minutes before I have to meet Leo. It's a ten-minute drive into town so I have to hurry.
I throw on a pair of high-waisted dark denim jeans, a long sleeved burgundy colored top with a lace collar and my black leather jacket. I sit in front of my mirror and apply my make-up. As soon as I'm finished I pull on my ankle boots, grab my purse and hurry back down the stairs. I don't think I've ever gotten ready so fast.
"How do I look?" I ask, walking into the kitchen where Dad is now cooking.
He puts down the pot he's holding and walks towards me. "Beautiful," he says kissing the top of my head.
"Thanks, Dad." I pull him in for a quick hug.
"Come on, now. Enough of that."
I laugh at him as I rush towards the front door. I'm going to be so late.
"Have fun!" Dad calls as I climb into my jeep.
I wave at him through the windscreen before he closes the door. I glance at the clock. I switch on the ignition before hightailing it down the driveway.
I should have been at Leo's five minutes ago. Shit!
(Unknown POV)
"S-sir, we have w-word on the future Alpha of the Moonlight Pack."
"Go on," I say to the trembling man that is on his knees before me.
I hope he has good news for me. I really can't afford to be killing off anymore spies. I think I'm down to my last three at this stage. It's just so hard to get good help nowadays.
"Alpha Kent's son, Coby, is due to mate with the Pack Warrior's daughter, Alexis, as she is the rightful Alpha."
"I already know that," I snarl. "Are you telling me that that's all you're here to tell me?"
I push myself out of my chair and storm towards the pathetic wolf in front of me. He whimpers loudly and sinks down lower on the floor. The smell of his fear excites me.
"N-no, Sir!" He squeaks.
"You have ten seconds," I growl lowly.
"Alexis has found her rightful mate."
"Perfect!"
I turn to leave the room and I hear the man behind me let out a sigh of relief.
"There's more. S-sir."
I pause waiting for him to continue.
I take a sharp intake of breath as he utters two words that make my heart race with excitement.
"He's human."
