Chapter Two: Altercation

I know what it's like to feel disappointment. I suppose it's become second nature, as I have had the opportunity to feel self pity for over twenty years of my life. Disappointment in life is not an attractive trait as it only means your standards were too high for yourself and it's all come crashing down in front of you. Ah, shame.

To be the one on the other side however, but a familiar feeling, much worse than disappointment in oneself.

I wiped the palms of my hands onto my dark jeans discreetly for what felt like the sixth or seventh time in the short period I've been sitting here. My leg was shaking, up and down with nerves that I couldn't control.

It wasn't withdrawal this time, as I've had my fix not long ago.

I was good at deceit luckily, which meant that he couldn't see my internal panic of sitting in front of him, pretending to be completely okay when I'd rather hide in my closet as I used to when I was a young child, hiding away from my problems and confrontations.

Our eye contact persisted, and it bothered me. Usually, it was them who looked away first as I could intimidate them or make them nervous of my presence, but today it was the complete opposite. I was the one in the hot seat, and he could see through me.

"I'm surprised you showed up, I'll admit," Tyler clasped his hands on the table in front of us.

"I told you we would talk," I commented and shifted from bouncing one leg to bouncing the other. It still hurt to move certain muscles for long periods of time. My skin had various dark bruises, concerning enough for an outsider to see if given the chance.

Tyler looked around the empty bar before making his way back to my face. "Where are you staying?"

I eyed him for longer than he was expecting and I could tell it was making him angry. We didn't come here to have boring conversations about the weather.

"I got a place not far from here, just on the corner of fifth," I mumbled.

It'd been three weeks since I've woken up. Three weeks since I've seen Tyler or Aria. She'd have been long gone by now with the money I sent her off with. She was safe wherever she landed, and very well supported for as long as she needed or even wanted to be.

I hadn't seen Nash since I've woken up, nor Joey. It was making me nervous, to live in a ghost town, off grid but in the middle of a manhunt.

"I see," He sipped his beer while staring me down. "I expected you to be long gone by now. I didn't think you'd reside here."

I gave a small, one sided smile. "It's only temporary. You know me, I'll be on my way and up to something in no time."

The truth was this was the safest place for me, for now. It gave me an opportunity to keep an eye on Tyler and Lacey, while being on the lookout for trouble. Nash wouldn't expect me to stay in town if I knew my ex girlfriend was in danger. No, he'd expect me to do something crazy like run away with her, only to be caught.

I had to keep a low profile, just as he was currently.

Tyler muttered something under his breath and shook his head. "I've been impatient. It's been almost two months since you've been back."

I nodded. "I'm aware."

He stared at me, emotionless.

This side of Tyler was something I don't think I could ever get used to. I was used to his puppy dog character and joking personality. But I was met with a cold, distant person whom I didn't recognize.
