As the gang gathered around the table, talking over lunch, Hiccup came over and sat down, grabbing a porkchop. Right as he did, he noticed Fishlegs was talking about his mom, since she did an incident in regards of their conversation. Which immediately reminded him of something.

It was today. Today was that day again.

It was his mother's birthday.

Hiccup sighed and took a bite. He hated being reminded of this, but even though he didn't even know his mother since he was practically a baby when she died, it was still hard on him. He wished he knew her. He's heard tons and tons of stories of her. Stoick would sometimes mope around thinking of her, but was the storyteller of those stories, especially when he was young.

It was hard growing up without a mother, because his father was the chief and was always busy, so Gobber has to take over and babysit, but also when others talked about their moms he couldn't help but feel slightly jealous. If only he had a mom too...

But nonetheless, he was glad his father was there, even if Hiccup and him never really got along until several years before. He helped him become a man like he is now, and had plenty of good memories. He wouldn't ever change that.

"You okay, Hiccup?" Astrid had noticed that Hiccup had grabbed his food but didn't start eating, and was looking down at his lap with a solemn face.

He looked up. "Um...yeah, I think so." He started out for his hut, and he ate his porkchop on the way, with Toothless following.

"Is he okay?" Fishlegs asked.

Astrid shrugged. "I don't know."

Hiccup made it to his loft in his hut, and at the foot of his bed, he opened his chest and took out an item and sat on the floor with it, just looking and holding it in his cupped hands.

It was a little blue toy, that looked half like a Deadly Nadder. Whenever he felt down about his mom, or anything else for that matter, he always looked at it to comfort himself.

It was the toy dragon that his own mother had made him when he was a baby, but apparently, if it weren't for Johann, he wouldn't have it to this day, since when he was a toddler he threw in the sea when sailing with his dad one day because he hated dragons so much back then. But one day Johann had found it, and pulled some strings to get it back to the Chief of Berk.

Hiccup suddenly heard his door being opened. He looked to see Astrid coming up the loft. "Hiccup, are you okay?"

Hiccup put it on top of the chest, and stood and sat on the edge of his bed. "Yeah."

She sighed when she saw the toy. She picked it up and sat next to him, looking at it. "No, you're not. What are you thinking about? Did something happen? Does it have to do with your dad?"

Hiccup sighed, reluctant in telling her. Why would she care? But then again, why should he care? It's only been 18 years since she died, he should be over it by now.

He was hesitant in telling her at first, since he didn't think it mattered that much... or that he thought she wouldn't care. But then he realized if she was his girlfriend he should obviously tell her everything...that's what relationships were all about. And if she didn't care... well leave that up for her.

"It's my mom. It's...it's supposed to be her birthday today."

Astrid looked back down at the toy from her boyfriend. "Oh."

"I know, it's been 18 years, and I feel pretty stupid still grieving over her sometimes... you know, because I didn't know her...but sometimes I just wish I did."

Astrid looked at Hiccup. "Hiccup, shut up. That's not true. You shouldn't feel stupid. She was your mother, and nothing could change that. And I know you didn't know her that well, since you were a baby when she died... but I'm sure she was a wonderful person."

Hiccup smiled. "Thank you, Astrid."

She smiled back and nodded.

Hiccup embraced her into a hug and started to cry. "It's just not fair. You have no idea what's it like to grow up without a mother. All of you guys have one, but I just feel so empty sometimes when I think about it...it's just not fair."

Astrid, realizing how much hurt he had in his heart at the moment, patted his back. "I will never understand what you're going through, but I do know losses, so I understand a little. But I just hope that since you grew up with no mother... I hope you don't make it define you."

After a moment, Hiccup gathered his wits and broke the hug, wiping his eyes. "No, I don't. I had Dad... I just wish...I don't know, I feel like such a fool now."

"You're not a fool, Hiccup. I distinctly remember crying over my uncle Finn a couple times."

Hiccup stared at her. "You have cried before?"

She sighed. "Yes, I do have a heart."

Hiccup smiled. "Thanks."

She punched his arm. "Good. You okay now?"

"Ow! Yes, I am...until you punched me! But I guess I'm used to it by now," Hiccup exclaimed rubbing his arm.

She smiled. "Okay, let's go." Before she stood up, she leaned in and kissed Hiccup on the lips, her hand on his cheek, and pulled away and stood up quickly, nodding toward the door. "Let's go on a flight now, shall we? Let's unburden the mood?"

Hiccup grinned happily, and the two were out, or three, with Toothless who had been watching the entire thing, and went out and onto a long flight with each other on their dragons.
