(Nolan's POV)
Just when I was about to give up, a voice came from the other end of the hallway.
?: There might be a way...
I sniffled. I climbed up on my crutches and made my way down the hall. I stopped at where the voice had come from. I was almost disappointed when it was who I thought it would be.
"And why do you care?"
Micheal: Just hear me out. Please.
I frowned. I could barely even look at him. He sat on a small white bed in the corner of the cell. He sat in the shadows, so I could barely see his face.
"I'm tired of you. I hate you! I hate you.."
I cried more.
Micheal: First of all, Murder is a form of criminal homicide. Basically, if it is decided that the homicide is justifiable, then criminal charges will not be applied. In other words, if you can prove that Lou was forced to act the way he did, he will likely not have to serve life in prison.
Once again, we were all dead silent. I'd forgotten that Micheal could actually be pretty smart when it came to law and crimes. He was a lawyer after all.
Micheal: Another thing, Lou murdered multiple dolls in the past, it's true. However, the last victim was probably...executed over 2 years ago. Therefore, it would not really count as a valid criminal offense. There's also the fact that he's been on his best behavior lately. Isn't that right, Lou?
No one answered.
Micheal: Oh, that's right. Silly me.
He pat his face once with his right hand.
Micheal: How could I forget the bruises on my face? Ow.
Lou: Why are you trying to help us?
He looked my way and down at the ground again. This time it was a sad expression. He shrugged his shoulders. And then he laughed.
Micheal: I suppose I've lost my mind...As for the...incident that occured last night...Lou wouldn't be charged with what I think would be third-degree assault, due to the fact that it was self defense. Therefore he wouldn't have to spend even a year of jail time. In conclusion, you have nothing to worry about.
I made my way back to Lou. He still sat on the ground. He looked up at me with his soft blue eyes.
"Is all that true, Lou?"
Lou: It is. I'd forgotten about all of that.
We both looked in the direction where Micheal was. For some reason his mood had shifted again. He was actually being nice...
I strolled down the hallway once more, and made eye contact with Micheal.
"How 'bout you?"
Micheal:...What about me?
"Well, I wanna save you too."
He furrowed his eyebrows and looked quite annoyed.
Micheal: What the fuck is wrong with you? I broke your leg! I did awful things to you! Don't you get it, Nolan? I'm beyond help! There's no point in trying to help me! You're so stupid!
"That's not true! You deserve a second chance."
Micheal: I've had my chance! Just forget it already! You can't undo what I've done.
"I know. I know that. But Micheal..."
I stood closer to the cell, and gripped the bars.
"There's still good in you. I know there is. I can feel it. I wanna help you."
Micheal: It's like Lou said...I can't get away with what I've done...Just let me die. I deserve to be lynched or whatever.
I sighed. I really didn't know what to do. This was probably the one thing Lou could never understand about me. No one ever could.
I looked up at the blue-haired doll. An idea had popped into my head.
"What if... we didn't have the same rules as the humans? What if instead of prison, the uh...um...guilty person..? What's it called?"
Micheal: Defendant?
"Yeah, that!...What if the defendant was sent to a psychi-psy-psychiatr-uh-"
Lou: Psychiatric?
"...A psychiatric hospital instead?"
I cringed at myself. Sometimes when I got excited I forget how to speak. I blushed lightly. Both dolls, Micheal and Lou, knew that about me.
Lou: That's actually not a bad idea...Would I have to go too though?
"Well, I was thinking , that if someone did a crime, they could perhaps be diagnosed and treated."
Micheal: Heh, and what would I be diagnosed with? Anger issues?
Lou: Schizophrenia...Bipolar... Intermittent Explosive Disorder... possibly Borderline Personality Disorder... Sadism for sure.
Micheal: Gee thanks, Lou. That's awful generous of you.
Lou: No problem, buddy. Anytime!
Their sarcasm was making me rethink the whole thing. I suppose it was better than them beating the shit out of each other.
Micheal: My turn. Let's see...I think you'd have...Bulimia Nervosa...Obsessive-compulsive disorder...and anti-social personality disorder...
Lou: Wow.
Micheal: Your welcome.
I couldn't help but cringe.
"Are you two done, yet?!"
It felt awkward to have them bicker like that.
"Anyways, I think it's worth a try, right?"
Micheal: Well, how long would I have to stay there?
"Uh...a few weeks I guess..."
Lou: If you think that that's the better alternative...then I guess I agree.
My heart grew warm. I knew Lou didn't love the idea. I couldn't help but suspect he was agreeing just to make me happy. I looked at Micheal. I hoped he'd at least consider.
Micheal: It'd be much easier if you just sentenced me to death, ya know? Besides, who's gonna pick watching over a couple of maniacs over being with their kid?
"Well...I am the mayor now...I can just ask our psychologists to take shifts."
Micheal and Lou: What?
Lou: You're mayor?
"Well, yeah. Ox kinda freaked out after I'd told him what he was dealing with. He wanted me to be take the position. Even if Lou helped sometimes."
Lou: ...cool.
"...So what do you say, Micheal?"
Micheal: "Thank you"?
A small chuckle escaped my lips.
"No, I meant about my idea!"
He smiled at me. I felt fuzzy inside. Like the sun had suddenly shone on me, making everything brighter and warmer. I was immediately confused. Why had I laughed? Why was I smiling at such a horrible person?
Micheal: I guess...It's worth a try...
I smiled back at him. I couldn't remember the last time Micheal and I genuinely smiled at each other. It seemed like such a long time ago.
He wasn't a monster.
Not at all.
He was just a person who'd lost his way.
He was just someone who needed help.
