Pulling out of the parking lot, I desperately tried to calm myself. I was overwhelmed with everything that just happened, but in the best way. Biting my lip I couldn't help but think about how firm his body was, and strong he felt as he held me against him out of the rain. Even soaking wet he smelled so good, and I was lost in his eyes as he moved my hair out of my face.
I jumped when my phone started to ring through the car's Bluetooth. Looking at the name on the dash, my heart sank.
Jeremy.
Clearing my throat to try and even my voice, I accepted the call.
"Hey." I answered.
"When will you be home?" He asked.
"In just a few minutes. Why?"
"I got off early today and you weren't here. Just wondering where you are." He said.
"Oh, I went to the coffee shop for a while. I'm almost home." I said.
"Ok. I'll see you soon then." He said as he hung up.
"....Bye." I said to myself as I hung up as well.
When I pulled into the garage, I turned off the car and sat there for a minute as I closed my eyes. I can't act like this. I can't feel like this. It's so wrong. Never once since Jeremy and I have been together have I looked at another man and felt any kind of attraction. Now out of the blue, I feel like a high school girl with a crush on the cute quarterback.
Rubbing my eyes, I let out a heavy breath and slid out of my car. Before stepping inside, I took off my wet shoes and left them in the garage to dry out.
As I stepped inside I heard Jeremy talking to someone on the phone. It sounded like he was making plans for tonight. Not wanting to interrupt him, I passed him and went into the laundry room, and pulled off all of my wet clothes. Tossing them into the washer, I grabbed a clean pair of Jeremy's sweatpants and one of his t-shirts and put them on.
"Hey, why are you soaked?" He asked me as he looked at my wet hair.
"I uh, got caught in the rain leaving, and I didn't have my umbrella with me." I said.
"Oh, that sucks." He said with a chuckle.
I gave him an unappreciative look as I moved around him to the kitchen to make another cup of tea to help me warm up.
"Who were you talking to?" I asked him as I puttered.
"Carter." He said with a smile.
I raised my eyebrows as I waited for him to tell me more.
"I got promoted today." He said with a huge smile.
"What?" I asked, shocked.
"Mmhmm." He said standing up straighter.
"Congratulations!" I said as I moved around the counter and hugged him. "When do you officially start the new job?"
"Monday." He said hesitantly.
"That's quick."
"I know. And I know we talked about this, and we weren't sure if it was a good move, but I think we will make it work. I'll travel a few times a month but I think the extra money will make it all worth it." He said as he ran his hands down my arms and into my hands.
We had talked about this position when he was told of the possibility of being offered the job. He had to travel frequently for conferences and things about new home designs and customer satisfaction stuff. Some trips would be short weekends but others could be a whole week. Not only would it be something to adjust to with a marriage, but I have been asking him if he was ready to start a family, and this job just doesn't fit well with that life.
