Walking down the hall to my office, I opened the door and set everything on my desk from the meeting that just ended. Looking at the clock, it was three in the afternoon, and I didn't have much more to do for the day. Picking up my phone, I walked over to Elijah's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in." I heard him say just before I opened the door. "Since when do you knock?"
"I dunno." I said with a shrug as I sank down on the couch.
Opening his mini fridge, Elijah grabbed two water bottles and walked over to the couch and sat down next to me. Opening the bottle he handed me, I took a sip and put the cap back on.
"You're ready to go home aren't you?" He asked with a chuckle.
"Yeah." I said with a smile.
"How are things going now that the divorce has been over for a while and you're able to settle a little more?"
"It's fucking perfect." I said as I sat up a little more.
"Yeah? You think she's the one?" Elijah asked.
"I've known she's the one for a while now." I said, like it was obvious.
Elijah was quiet for a minute and I looked over at him.
"Are you going to ask her to marry you?" He asked as he gave me a knowing smile.
"Yeah, at some point. I need to plan it out, but I actually just picked up the ring the other day."
"Well shit." He said as he laughed.
"What?"
"I figured you were thinking about it, but you're really in it." He said surprised.
"Yeah, I'm not messing around. I just want to be sure she's ready." I said.
I sat in Elijah's office for a while as we talked before collecting my stuff and sneaking out the door a little bit early. Being Friday, I was ready to start the weekend and be home. When I got into my car, I sent Harper a text that I was on my way, and pulled out of the parking garage. Since it was still early, I called in a pick up order from one of our favorite restaurants and picked up dinner on my way home.
Pulling into the garage next to Harper's Tahoe, I put my work bag over my shoulder and carried the food inside. The house was quiet as I walked into the kitchen. I didn't see Harper anywhere, so I set everything down on the counter.
"Harper?" I called out.
"I'm in the bedroom." She said softly.
Pushing the bedroom door open, I saw her sitting on the bed, under the covers with tear filled eyes.
"What's wrong?" I asked as I quickly sat down next to her and wrapped my arms around her.
She didn't answer me as she started to cry again. Repositioning, I pulled her into my lap as I just held her.
"Did something happen at your appointment earlier?" I asked as I rubbed her back.
She wrapped her arms around me tighter, and I knew that meant "yes".
"I love you, you know that right?" She said as she stayed tight in my arms.
"Of course I know that. I love you too." I said.
"I didn't do this on purpose..." She said as her grip around me loosened.
"Do what?" I asked as she sat back enough for me to look at her.
She just looked at me for a minute before leaning over and picking up a small piece of paper off of her nightstand.
She hesitated briefly, before handing me the paper and whispering, "Don't hate me."
