I remember everything. Old memories are slowly coming back. I can look at a room and instantly remember every face of every person. I can't walk into a room without noticing everything there is to notice; and it hurts. My head just hurts. I want the memories and the remembering to stop. There isn't a second of peace. Always new information, every second I see a thousand new things. I don't want to remember how many people were in the line for a cookie this afternoon. I don't want to remember how many times the person beside me has blinked in the amount of time that they've been sitting there. I don't want to remember. It hurts too much.
"Oh gosh, I think I just remembered the day I was born," Carrie groans.
I open my eyes to look at her and again my head is filled with information.
"Make it stop, make it stop!" I plead to no one in particular. "Oh hey, I remember the day I figured out how to move my fingers the way I wanted them to move."
"How old were you?" Carrie asks with a slight laugh.
"Um, I was a baby I didn't know what time was. But, maybe about three months?"
"Ha! I found my hands faster!"
"Whatever baby Einstein. How do we stop this headache?!"
"We're supposed to go to the cylinders again and we'll be shown how to 'control our brain activity'. I don't want to go back to the cylinders of death," She blindly reaches for my hand.
"Me either, but if it'll fix this then I really don't care if the cure is having our brains sawed in half. You should open your eyes so I don't make you run into a wall," I pull her along with me.
"So gruesome you are with the sawing of the brain. Oh, and if you ram me into a wall I'll kill you."
"Mmmhm, sure. Now stop talking, I have enough information to process as it is."
We arrive at the cylinders a few painful minutes later. After we step inside and the doors are sealed behind us, a voice echoes through the glass tubes encasing us. The mechanical voice tells us that for two hours every day -until we are in complete control of our brain power again- we will be here in the cylinders to learn how it control it.
It's pretty cool, I feel like a cyborg or a superhero. A superhero/cyborg in extreme pain that is.After our first class my head is hurting a little bit less so I decide to go to rec room 23. (Which is appropriately nicknamed the beanie bag room) I walk in a curl up in a beanie bag beside Melody, who is reading a book.
"Whatcha reading?" I ask.
Melody jumps at the sound of my voice. "Oh! Hi, Aria. I'm reading a boring history book for my class tomorrow. I'll ace every text with this weird new memory thing in my brain!
"I know! Tomorrow we're taking the test about the 1990s, right?"
"Yeah, that was like a thousand years ago! Here, take this book," she hands me an old book sitting beside her. "I finished it already."
"Thanks," I smile. "So, have you seen Nate, Jason or Jen around lately?"
"Yeah, Jason's been hanging around with Carrie in the arcade a lot, Jennifer's been rock climbing. I haven't seen Nate much, other than at breakfast."
"Okay thanks," I sigh.
"Does your head hurt as much as mine? Because mine hurts a lot. I hope it stops soon, do you think it'll stop soon? I think CeCe will help us and it will stop soon," Melody chatters on happily.
"Yeah, mine hurts too; and I'm sure you're right. That CeCe will have us feeling better very soon I mean. I doubt the daily training will last long."
"Good! I'm glad you think so! Thinking positive is the best way to think! Don't you think so? If everyone looked at the glass as half full we'd all be so much happier!"
"Yes-" I start to say but she cuts me off as she continues,
"And if people didn't complain! It's so discouraging when people complain!"
"Yeah," I laugh. "How's your studying going Mel?"
"Oh! Right! Thanks for reminding me! We'll both do so great on this test tomorrow!"
"We will," I smile.
I can't be upset with Melody, she too adorably sweet. Plus, being jealous is ridiculous! She does even like Nate like that. I'm just being silly.
I sit with her and study for a while more before we both go to bed. The next day we all take our test, hang out in the arcade, go to the cylinders, and meet at the message board to see if we passed. We all got As. I think maybe the awesome newly expanded brainpower is worth the headaches! After that, we head over to the cafeteria for our celebratory ice cream. We watch movies until our curfew time, when we all head to our rooms. It's a pretty average day for us now, and I fall asleep thinking tomorrow will be just as average.
