"Hello?"
Rey answered her phone as she sat on Ben's luxurious sofa and binged her favorite Netflix show. He was in the kitchen making her "a special meal" as he called it. The fact that he cooked for her made her love for him escalate alone.
"Hi Rey! It's Leia, I just wanted to follow up on your decision on the transfer to our New York headquarters?"
Rey held back a distressed sigh and put on her fake voice. "Hi Leia! I apologize but I recall I still have at least a few more days before I need to get back to you, correct?" She tried to keep her voice down as much as possible so Ben wouldn't hear.
She still hadn't told Ben about the offer; she didn't know how. Of course she wanted to, but everything between them was so special and she didn't want to lose it. Two nights ago when he said he loved her she swore the Earth stopped spinning for a second at his words. There was no fear in her bones when she reciprocated the phrase and she fell asleep that night to the steady beat of his heart against her cheek.
It was a feeling greater than any other and that night was easily one of the best of her whole life.
"That's right dear, however, the sooner you make a decision the better. We want you to try and get out there by next week so as much as I understand it's a huge deal, it'll be easier once we know what's happening."
Rey's face turned to one of shock. By next week? She hadn't even told Ben about this; he had no idea what was going on and now she might be moving to New York next week?
"Yeah uh, I'm just trying to figure everything out but I promise I'll let you know as soon as I can." Her voice was almost to a whisper now. She could hear the distant sound of pots clanging from the kitchen.
"That's all I ask of you, dear. Anyway, I won't take up any more of your time so just get back to me soon alright?"
Rey agreed verbally and hung up before letting out a distressed sigh. She was about to slump forward and throw her head into her hands but Ben walked into the room with the most beautiful plate of pasta she'd ever seen. He eyed her phone as he set it down in front of her.
"Who was that?"
For a split second Rey panicked internally trying to come up with an excuse.
Orrrrr you could just tell him her conscious whispered.
No, she shot back at herself.
"Uh- appointment. Nail appointment. Confirmation. Yeah."
She thought it was a solid reason. However, the forming furrow of Ben's eyebrows said otherwise.
"Nails? You never get your nails done.." He questioned.
It was true. Rey never saw the need to get her nails done professionally so it made sense why Ben almost didn't buy it.
"Oh well, I decided it was time for a change. Just a little treat for myself I guess." She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes.
A wave of confusion and possibly concern washed over his face but he masked it with a small grin and an "Okay. I love you." God, she could get used to hearing those words. Reaching up and cupping his cheek, she brought him down for a kiss.
"I love you too."
"You better." She smiled at him. Her truest love. It sounded cliché, but it really wasn't.
The grin never left his face as he sauntered back into the kitchen. Rey let out a heavy sigh of relief that he was gone but her distress coated it, making it invisible. She knew she had to tell Ben eventually, but he was the greatest part of her life now and losing him was the scariest thought to ever cross her mind. And now that they were in love... it just made her decision that much more difficult.
