Chapter 17
Ice Ice BabyMaks
"Come Bear Come. Good boy. Sit Bear. Good boy!" Meryl exclaimed as she stroked the puppy's head and kissed his nose. "Mommy's gonna miss you." She told him and Bear barked and licked her cheek. She laughed and stood up. She looked so beautiful standing there looking up at me. All I wanted to do was pick her up, put her over my shoulder and drag her back to our bedroom. But she was already packed and ready to go. This was her job, she had to leave me here to go to Japan for a whole week. It was going to be an excruciatingly long week without her. I walked over to her and put my arms around her body.
"Is Bear the only one you're going to miss?" I asked teasingly.
"You already know the answer to that." She said and kissed me, making any doubts I had wash away.
"Hurry home. I need you." I said, leaning my forehead against hers.
"I need you too. I'm so sorry I'm not going to be here for your birthday. I feel terrible! But I promise that I will make it up to you as soon as I get back." She promised and lightly kissed my ear. I groaned. God why did she have to leave? My birthday was in two days and Meryl wouldn't be there to celebrate. Sure I wasn't happy about it but I couldn't keep Meryl from going even if I wanted to... which I do.
"You promise?" I watched her smile widen.
"I promise." She said and kissed me long and hard "but I need to go... now." she whispered against my lips. I nodded. She left my arms and gave Bear another kiss on the head before grabbing her suitcase and heading out the front door. I watched Bear run to the window and watch her go. Then the little ball of fluff ran over to me, looked up, and pawed at my leg. I bent down and patted his head.
"I miss her too." I said and it has only been 30 seconds. Oh boy.
Meryl
I hate leaving him, I do. I wish I didn't have to go to Japan again. But right now I was on my way to the airport, getting farther and farther away from the man I love. Tomorrow is Maks' birthday and I was planning on spending the whole day with him, make it the best birthday he's ever had. Well now I was certain it could possibly be the worst birthday ever for him. It was getting dark and was almost at the airport when my cell phone rang. Charlie. I answered it and put it on speaker.
"Hey Charlie, I'm almost there." I said
"No need Mer. It's been canceled."
"Canceled? Really? They can do that?" I asked trying to conceal my excitement. But Charlie knew. He laughed on the other end.
"Yeah, Mer. Go home to Maks and tell him I said Happy Birthday." I could hear the smile in his voice. I hung up and squealed. I can go home to Maks! I turned the car around quickly and headed back home. A thought popped into my head along with a smile on my face. I took my phone and dialed. I had an idea.
Maks
I sat there on the couch staring at the TV without actually paying attention. I glanced at Bear sitting next to me, he looked up at the front door and lifted his ears for the millionth time tonight. I miss her too but you don't see me getting excited about every little bang outside. Then I heard a car door close. Meryl!? Bear raced to the door, scratching it and barking. I shot up from the couch and opened the door... it was Val. His hand was lifted like he was about to knock. I sighed and opened the door more to let him in.
"Yeah, good to see you too man." Val said and laughed.
"Val what are you doing here? It's like one in the morning." I said ignoring his sarcasm. I wasn't in the mood.
"Well it is technically your birthday so I'm taking you out. Get dressed and in the car, you have ten minutes." Val said, there was something in his voice that dared me to challenge him to see what would happen. I laughed at the thought then went to get changed.
I had no clue where Val was taking me and he wouldn't tell me. It was very frustrating. I was getting impatient and was about to demand where we were going when Val stopped the car. We were in what looked like the middle of nowhere. Nothing but trees and bushes. I opened my mouth to say something but Val beat me to it.
"Put this on." He handed me a blind fold.
"Why?" I asked, he rolled his eyes and sighed
"Just do it. And don't take it off until I say so." I glared at him but finally placed the blindfold over my eyes. I heard Val restart the car and turn the corner. He drove straight then turned and parked. He got out and came around to open my door to help me out. Now I see what Meryl doesn't like about surprises.
"Val this is ridiculous." I said as he started to lead me into wherever we were.
"Almost there." Is all he said. We walked into a building and it was cold. Really cold. Finally we stopped and Val told me to take off the blindfold. I blinked and looked around. We were inside an ice rink. An ice rink? Really? There was a pair of skates sitting right in front of me. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"What is this?" I asked and looked over at Val who was smiling and looking somewhere else. I turned to where he was looking and saw someone on the ice. She was amazing, a natural. She twirled with experience and smiled brightly as she did. When she spotted us her smile got wider and she skated over to us. Meryl. She skated faster and when she got to the end she jumped into my arms. I pressed my face to her neck, taking in her scent. It's only been hours but it's felt like years.
"Happy birthday!" She exclaimed when we broke the embrace. I kissed her and looked from her to Val. Val laughed.
"She called me an hour ago saying that her tour was canceled and she wanted to surprise you." He looked at us arm and arm and smiled. "Well my job here is done so you two have fun." He said and left. I looked at Meryl who couldn't seem to stop smiling. I knew my face was a mirror image of hers.
"So, you wanna tell me why we're at an ice rink?" I asked, I didn't think it was possible but her smile grew bigger.
"I'm going to teach you how to skate." She said and left my arms to go back on the ice. She never looked away from my eyes. I must have had a weird look on my face because she started laughing uncontrollably. It was contagious.
"So you're laughing at me now?" I asked in between laughs. "Oh I'm gonna get you." I said and pulled the skates on. I stood there at the edge about to step onto the ice.
"You gotta catch me first." Meryl giggled and skated away. I took a step forward and immediately regretted it. My foot slipped out and my other foot was forced to go along with it. I grabbed the wall before I fell on my butt.
"Not that easy is it?" Suddenly Meryl was right next to me. I jumped and laughed it off. She smiled and took my hands in hers, pulling me away from the safe wall. "The ice isn't like the dance floor, Maks. It's not about steps, it's about glides. Watch." She said and looked down at her feet. I tried to do as she did but things didn't got too well... I slipped and fell forward, tackling Meryl to the ground.
"Oof." I landed on top of her. She was shaking with laughter. I love that laugh. I looked her in the eyes for a while then brought my lips to hers. The world melted away. I closed my eyes and focused on Meryl's lips. It took a while for us to come back to earth. My lips were swollen and we were both breathing hard.
"Let's go home." Meryl said.
Meryl
Maks drove us home while I snuggled up against his arm, thinking of nothing but the beautiful stars above our heads...
I woke up on the couch with a blanket on me and the fire going. I sat up just as Maks came in with two mugs in his hands. The scent of hot cocoa was in the air. Bear was asleep on the floor next to me, twitching in his deep dream world. Maks handed me a mug but I just placed it on the table. I took his and did the same. I took hold of his collar and pulled him to me. He snuggled in next to me, his lips never leaving mine as we slipped into the world that I loved..."A Meryl and Maks Fanifc" is copyright 2015 @Maksyl18, all rights reserved.
