Chapter 19
Viktoriya
Meryl
Days went by and there was no sign of a baby living inside of me. I wasted pregnancy tests by checking everyday. Maks said I was checking too often and that things like this take time. I knew that but I wanted this so badly that I couldn't think about anything else.
"Mer, you're going to make yourself crazy about this. Come and relax, you're worrying the dog." He was right. Bear's head lifted every time I got up. So I sat down next to Maks on the couch and tried to relax.
"You're right. It takes time and it may not have even worked. I'm just getting my hopes high for nothing." I leaned my head against his chest as he rubbed my arm to comfort me.
"That's not what I said. It could've worked. But even if it didn't, it's not the end of the world, we could always try again. And have some fun with it." Maks said and raised his eyebrows mischievously. I hit him playfully.
"Shut up." I said smiling.
"Hey, I have an idea." Maks got up and turned on the radio to some slow song I've never heard of. He came over to me and extended his hand. "Meryl Elizabeth Chmerkovskiy, would you do this man the honor of dancing with him?" My smile widened and I put my hand in his.
"Yes. I will." Maks twirled me around the living room and lifted me up into the air until we became too tired to continue. It was so fun that I forgot about the baby and focused all my attention on Maks. Bear even got into it with his barking and jumping around. It was like he was trying to dance with us. All three of us collapsed onto the couch after the exciting dance competition and watched a movie. At some point both of my boys fell asleep and left me sitting there alone with my thoughts.

"Daddy, wake up." I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar voice. In front of me I saw a beautiful little girl leaning over me. She had Meryl's long dark hair and beautiful smile. I sat up and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. "Yay you're up!" The little girl screamed and ran into my arms. Before I could respond she was out of my arms and smiling up at me.
"Is this a dream?" I asked and looked around. We were in a really bright white room with nothing else in it.
"Of course it is, silly!" the girl giggled. "I had to tell you to tell mommy that I was coming soon. We're going to be together real soon daddy!"
"What? Are you?" It couldn't be.
"It's me. Viktoriya." The girl explained. Viktoriya. That was what we planned to name our unborn daughter. Was I really dreaming of her. No dreams are dreams. It doesn't mean anything. I was shaking my head at the girl. "You don't believe me?" Viktoriya said and for the first time she looked upset.
"This is just a dream." I said but Viktoriya's smile soon returned.
"It's okay, you'll see for yourself soon. Bye daddy!" Viktoriya waved at me and the dream ended.
I woke up on the couch next to Meryl. It was getting dark now but Meryl was still awake. She turned towards me and smiled.
"Hi sleepyhead." She said warmly.
"Meryl, I think you should try a pregnancy test again." I couldn't find a logical reason to why I thought it might work but I just had a feeling. She must of heard the certainty in my voice because she stopped herself from asking whatever question was on her lips and went to the bathroom. It took about ten minutes for Meryl to emerge from the bathroom. She was staring at the test. Then she looked up at me. A million emotions on her face.
"It worked, I'm pregnant. Maks I'm pregnant!" she yelled and jumped into my arms. I hugged her tightly and pressed my face into her hair. The dream was right? How could that be? I pushed the thoughts away and thought about me and Meryl finally having the family that we wanted. Meryl left my arms and looked at me with joy and happiness.
"How did you know?" she asked,
"Just a hunch I guess." I lied, I would tell Meryl eventually but I still had to figure out how I knew I could trust the strange dream I had. But above all: we were finally going to have a baby.
