On the streets, their paths intersected. It was December 20th, 2005, when Kyle and Evelyn first made eye contact with each other. As they crossed paths, their shoulders briefly brushed past one another. Kyle arrived at the local noodle shop. The owner of the restaurant, Ms. Jones scowled at the sight of Kyle. Ms. Jones was the ex-mistress of Kyle's father and also Kyle's mother's ex-best friend. Kyle fell to his knees and he begged Ms. Jones. He implored. He cried. He pleaded. He begged that he be given a place to stay. After several pleas, Ms. Jones finally agreed. She agreed to let Kyle stay -- on one condition: he is allowed to live in the restaurant, as long as he does chores to help maintain the restaurant. A few minutes later, Evelyn walked into the restaurant. Kyle and Evelyn were both surprised to see each other, as they had just crossed paths thirty minutes ago. It turned out that Evelyn was also acquainted with Ms. Jones. Ms. Jones was Evelyn's ex-neighbor. Like Kyle, Evelyn too begged Ms. Jones, as she had nowhere to stay. Ms. Jones finally relented, but Evelyn had to agree to work in the restaurant, like Kyle. 

Eventually, Kyle and Evelyn started their life at the restaurant. They would go to school in the morning, and then they would work all night washing the dishes, cleaning the tables, and sweeping the floor. They were occasionally beaten by Ms. Jones, who had a drinking problem. As Ms. Jones' drinking problem worsened, her abusive behavior toward Kyle and Evelyn increased. To avoid getting hit by a drunk Ms. Jones, Kyle and Evelyn would often hide together in the storage rooms. They started spending time together, and a friendship was formed. They found solace and comfort in each other, and they would share their deepest secrets with one another. Their friendship was so pure and true. They would always wish the best for each other. When Ms. Jones tried to hit them, they would try to protect each other. This kind of friendship was very rare, and these eleven-year olds had such a friendship. 

Their friendship grew over the period of two years. Everything was going well, until one day, a woman showed up at the restaurant out of the blue.
