"Honey what's happening?!" Mrs. Goodkind said while her husband was carrying their struggling thirteen year old daughter to the car.Shelby woke up short of breath unable to speak. She somehow made her way to her parents bedroom and signaled that something was wrong.
As she continued to struggle her anxiety increased causing her to pass out a few times. That's when her dad scooped her up and they decided to race to the hospital.
"I don't know, but let's just get there." With that, her dad jumped into the drivers seat and made their way towards the hospital.
About ten minutes later they arrived there. Shelby was immediately put on a Gurnee and rushed into a room.
From their she was hooked up to a Dina-map which took her vitals but more importantly her Oxygen levels.
"Shelby, your O2 is at 88% so we're going to hook you up the this little nasal cannula. It's going to sit in your nose, It might tickle a little and might feel a little cold but you'll hopefully start to feel better okay?" Shelby just nodded too anxious and distressed to even speak.
After they got her O2 up a little bit the doctor soon came in and examined the young girl.
"And one last breath for me." Dr. Keaton said while listening to her lungs.
"So I am hearing some wheezing and crackles in her lower left lobe which has me slightly concerned. I'd like to run a few tests along with X-rays and MRIs to see what we're dealing with."
"Do anything you have to do." The blondes dad said holding his wife's hand tightly and silently praying.
After hours upon hours of tests and scans Dr Keaton had a diagnosis.
"She appears to have a mass on her lower left lobe, it's quite large and is constricting her passageways causing this difficulty of breathing we are seeing. I think our best option is to surgically go in and remove the mass."
After much discussion, Shelby was scheduled for surgery soon after that to remove the mass.
"I'm Scared mom." Shelby said in the elevator on their way up to the OR, her parents allowed to be with her on the journey there.
"I know baby, but this is needed. Just keep praying and everything will be okay." Her mom stroked her hair out of her face.
"This is where we'll have to leave you." The nurse said to the blondes parents.
"We love you honey, we'll see you when you wake up."
With that Shelby was wheeled into the OR and her 2hour surgery began.
- 2 hours later -
Dr. Keaton approached the Goodkinds in the waiting room.
"How is she?"
"She's doing just fine, she's in recovery right now so when she starts to wake we'll send her and you guys up to her room for the night." Dr Keaton took a seat next to Shelby's dad.
"Now about the mass, when we went in it was larger than we thought. It had started to spread to surrounding tissue which I'll be honest isn't a good sign. I sent it for a biopsy and asked them to rush the results."
"And what we're they Doctor?"
"Shelby has a malignant tumor on her lower left lobe. It hasn't metastasized so it would be classified as stage one. My team and I believe that if we go back in tomorrow and remove the surrounding effected tissue then She'll be able to go on living a healthy life and not have to receive any further treatment." Shelby's parents were shocked but also happy that the doctor seemed very confident in the procedure.
