Tap tap tap
With three loud taps on his glass, Dumbledore was able to gain the attention of hundreds, nearly a thousand young witches and wizards. The chattering stopped instantly as they all turned their attention to the headmaster.
The hundreds of students went silent as they stared toward the front of the great hall and waited for their Head master to begin. He flashed a smile at the students and they instantly relaxed, the tension in the room relaxed as he began.
"Welcome, Students, to a new year at Hogwarts." every sentence he spoke was lyrical, and singsong. The Headmaster continued his welcoming speech, it was the same as every year, except for a bit at the end, something about a surprise, something they'd discuss later. The students dismissed this, since Dumbledore was known for blowing things out of proportion, they were sure it was nothing. Although some students had their suspicions.
Lana stared at her mother's new flat. It was, cozy. Lynette started a job at the ministry after leaving her muggle husband, and Colette was supposed to be off at some elite boarding school, which was costing Lynette an arm and a leg. Before Lana could knock on the door her mother swung the door open. She stood in front of her eldest daughter, in jeans and a t-shirt, which very unusual for Lynette Darcy. Lana could tell something was wrong, although she could keep herself well composed, Lana could tell she was a bit panicked. Lynette pulled Lana in quickly.
Meanwhile at Hogwarts, with a wave of Dumbledore's hand the doors opened and an army of young witches and wizards spilled in, and at the front of the herd was Professor McGonogall leading them to the front of the room.
The other students fought to withhold their yawns and keep their heavy eyelids from snapping shut as the sorting ceremony commenced. It was incredibly boring to anyone not involved in it. But, eventually they got through it, and the students, along with their new classmates, dug into the feast.
Back home, Lana had to deal with a disgruntled Colette. Her little sister hadn't had the privilege of spending the first half of her life in a magical environment like Lana. Colette didn't know about magic, and had never shown any signs of having any herself. After all, her father was a muggle.
Since Lana had arrived she had been trying to coax Colette out of the bathroom. Apparently there was an incident and she supposedly knocked over a China cabinet, which nearly fell on their mother, Lynette. This was traumatic for a ten year old, who almost crushed her mother using her mind. Colette was not budging. No matter what her mother and older sister said, she was staying put.
After many failed attempts, Colette was still unwavering, and remained in solitude. Lana and Lynette needed a break, so decided to catch up a bit out in the conservatory. Once they were settled, Lana took Lynettes hands in an attempt to comfort her. She couldn't hold back any longer, or she may have imploded right there.
"Mother, I'm so glad Collie is a witch!" She exclaimed with a sense of relief, and no regard for the frightened girl who no doubt heard her.
"Lana!" Lynette chastised. "Have some compassion." She said as she withdrew her hands from Lanas. They had come along way, but Lynette was still conceited, and a bit aloof.
"This is so exciting though! I'll be able to teach both of my sisters!" Lana instantly regretted that last bit when she saw the look of envy flash across her mother's face. Lynette had been offered the position of the Divination teacher at Hogwarts when Lana was little, but she had just found out she was pregnant with Isis, and with her husbands work and a small child to care for, she had to decline. The room fell silent, until Lynette stood suddenly.
"I think you should get back to Colette. Maybe a Hogwarts Professor can get through to her, since her own mother can't." Lynette said to Lana before storming off.
Lana thought about going to console her mother, but decided that Colettes need were greater than Lynette. She'd get over it.
Lana sat criss cross in front of the bathroom door, and knocked lightly. Nothing.
"Colette." Lana called. There was no response.
Lana worked to soften her tone, and tried again. "Collie."
There was a series of muted sniffles, and Lana heard her stir on the bathroom floor.
"Go away!" Colette called, her voice was raspy from crying.
Lana thought about what to say next. Whether to apologize, for lying all this time, or tell her everything would be okay. But she decided on a different route.
"I'm so happy you're a witch." She said proudly.
Colette scoffed. "What do you mean happy?" her voice was shaky and full of disbelief.
"Yeah! Magic is so cool Collie, I can't wait to teach you all about it!"
Lana heard Colette stand, and shuffle toward the door. She hesitated over the handle a bit, before opening the door just a crack.
"It is?" she sniffed. Lana pushed the door open a bit, and brought Colette into her lap. Then she wiped her tears, and held her little sister close.
"Of course!" she said, like it was a no brainer. Colette laughed, and instantly relaxed.
Lana and Colette sat awake for hours talking. Colette had so many questions about Hogwarts, and was getting increasingly excited as Lana told her stories. By the end of it Colette was more than prepared to attend Hogwarts the following year, and Lana couldn't have been happier for her. All three Darcy children turned out to be witches. 'Incredible' she thought to herself.
Well past midnight, a little before sunrise to be exact, Lana stumbled out of her sisters bedroom. The two had lost track of time, and became completely engulfed in talks of Hogwarts and magic. Lana saw the time and nearly jumped out of her skin. She spent so much time talking about Hogwarts, and now she was going to be late for her first day as a Professor. She quickly found her mother.
"Well, I guess you'll be expecting a letter from Hogwarts next year, Mum." Lana said cheerily before disapparating. The Darcy family didn't do well with goodbyes, well, Lynette didn't do well with them.
With a loud crack, Lana apparated outside the Hogwarts grounds. It was really inconvenient, the whole 'no apparating onto the grounds' thing. Lana cursed Dumbledore as she made her towards the castle, it was late, or early and mosquitoes were buzzing around her face, she even considered hexing Dumbledore on her way up.
The morning air was crisp and cool, everyone was no doubt at breakfast by the time she got to the school.
Lana was bummed about missing the first night with the students, but thought it was for the best. Just the thought of seeing Severus for the first time in years at that table made her uncomfortable. Lana planned on, eventually, going to the dungeons during a free period of his to tell him she was back.
Lana was just in time for the first class of the morning.
