"I GOTTA FIND A WAY TO BE STRONG"
WHENEVER RILEY SLEPT, SHE DREAMT. The possibilities were endless due to her creative mind that could picture her wildest fantasies or sketch her deepest fears. And this time her mind decided to be unpleasant to her.
Riley ran through the woods in the midst of night where she couldn't see what was in front of her. She ran, not knowing where we were trying to run to. Maybe it was her brother, maybe Rick, or maybe no one at all, she just wanted to run away. She continues until she finally stops to find a group of six. All of them were on their knees with their heads bowed to the ground. Riley soon became stuck, frozen in time.
The faces were nothing but a blur image up until she laid eyes on them one by one and soon their faces became recognizable. Daryl would be the first familiar face she saw until walkers came from the shadows and soon tore him to shreds. The same is happening to Glenn. Lori. Rick. Shane.
The last figure was still unrecognizable until the person became crystal clear revealing a small little freckled boy, Carl. The walker slashes its gnarling teeth into his shoulder blade, only to be received by high pitch cries from the boy. As much as she wanted to reach for him, her hand remained still and she couldn't cry for him, her lips sealed.
Riley became mortified, she woke up with gasps for air. She feels sweat lightly trickle on her hairline and the thumps of heartbeat pound against her chest.
"Aunt Riley!" Carl quietly calls out in alarm, holding her arm with fright.
She turns to see the boy she saw in her dreams standing on the side of her bed, alive and well.
"Carl," Riley exhales with her hand clutching the bedsheets she lays on top of, "What are you doing here?"
"Mom said to come get you for dinner and if you weren't ready, I could bring you a plate."
She gives a soft smile, "Thank you. I'll be out in a minute."
Soon Carl runs out to tell Lori the news. However, Riley wasn't ready for the public eye, not after the earliest incident and her horrible dream. Everything made her feel dizzy.
Riley sits herself up and tilts her head from side to side to pop the tension built in her neck. She drags her backpack closer to her to pull out two cigarettes and a lighter. Riley stands up and breathes slowly in and out, like oxygen were to decimate. She walked outside and turned to the woods where no one would bother her, but close enough to the camp.
Once she finds a safe place, she kneels down into the dirt and pulls her necessities out of the pockets of her jacket. She does her routine to then sigh in satisfaction when nicotine fills her body and almost makes her forget about the nightmare she once had.
Small clouds of smoke escape her lips and into the starry sky. It was funny, even when the world was going to ruins the stars were there no matter the situation and to somehow light the way.
