Chapter 2

Val's POV

As soon as Jocelyn and I enter the Institute I pin Jocelyn to the wall with one of my knives at her throat.

"He's not Jonathan!" I yell as my eyes turn black.

"Your father is a liar." She replies back, flinching away.

"I learned to read people. He might be a liar but he didn't abandon me as a baby. You did. You're no better than Valentine." I tell her as Alec, Lucy, Izzy, Aldertree, and Lydia join us and Clary finally walks inside with Simon trailing behind her. "You would willingly break a parabatai bond. Try and kill him again and I won't hesitate to let the arrow fly and hit you." I walk away and pass everyone.

"Val, what happened?" I heard one of the Lightwood girls ask. I ignore them and turn around to look at Aldertree.

"Where's Maryse?" I ask.

"The office." He replied.

I walk away quickly. "Maryse, can we talk?" I ask the matriarch. She nods.

"Jace isn't Valentine's son."

"But Valentine raised him and you."

"Biologically Jace isn't related to Valentine or me, but he's still my brother." I tell her. "You know I learned how to read people. Valentine wasn't lying when he told me Jace isn't my twin. We already knew that because of the age difference between us." I sigh.

"What happened out there?" She asked.

"Jocelyn was willing to sacrifice Jace. You and I both know Alec would never be the same if Jace died." I look at her. "I know you're mad at me because Alec called off that wedding, but I didn't ask him to do it. I need you to get that dead or alive order revoked on Jace. I'm begging you Maryse. You took us in, treated us as your own. Don't turn your back on your son. Please."

"I'll talk to Aldertree." She says. "Now please go get some rest." I turn to walk away. "Val, I'm sorry for what I said after the wedding."

"I'm used to people abandoning me Maryse. Especially mothers." I tell her as I think about Jocelyn abandoning me. I quickly leave the office before she can say another word and make my way to Alec's room. I knocked on his door.

"Open!" I heard him shout. I opened the door and walked in. "Val?"

"She thinks Jace is my twin. That's why she did it." I tell him.

"Why would she try and kill him then?"

"Because Valentine is a liar, but tonight I was looking for anything that would show he was biologically related to me. He's not, he has nothing from Valentine or Jocelyn." I tell him as I look at the ground. "She tried to kill him because she thinks he's Jonathan and Jonathan and I were born with demon blood in our veins. He experimented on us before we were born. And Jace is nothing like Jonathan."

Jace's POV

'You and I both not he wasn't the Jonathan born with demon blood. Jonathan was always angry. Jace isn't that. Jonathan never showed emotion that much when we were kids. Jace always did until you killed his falcon.' I think over the words Val said after I walked away from Valentine.

"Valkyrie always swore she would protect her brother." I glance up and see my father standing at my door. "If I know her like I used to then the second she and your mother returned to the Institute she threatened her. You see, I had to make a choice 10 years ago. I could keep you both, but you both would never reach your full potential. Me abandoning the both of you made you stronger. Valkyrie had been through it before with your mother."
