Cheat

(Tessie's POV)

I was walking around town. Dad and I made up last night and it was actually better this morning. We made breakfast together and it was actually fun. I walked past an alley, and I saw the Hawks messing with Guy, Averman, Jesse, Charlie, Karp, and Peter. "Come on. Want some more? You guys want some more? Come on! Yeah! You want some more? Come on!" The Hawks shout and I glare at them, but stop as I hear a jeering, then growling. Suddenly a kid my age came out from the shadows and scared the Hawks.

"Let's get out!" A Hawks kid shouted. "Move it!" Another Hawks kid exclaimed and I smirked as they skated out of there. "Thanks a lot." Charlie says to the kid that came from the shadows, but the kid slinks back into them. "All right man!" Jesse exclaims. "One, two! Boom!" The guys exclaim as they do a fist bump and I see Adam just standing there. "What are you looking at Banks?" I exclaim and Adam hightails it out of there.

"Good job Tess." Jesse says and all of the boys pat my back. Main reason why? This was the first time I've stuck up for myself and my friends, but in front of a Hawk, major win for me! "Thanks guys." I say with a smile.

(Time Skip)

We were at practice, and Dad was showing us how to cheat. I looked over at Charlie and we both hated the idea of having to cheat to win. "If we're going to cheat, we need to make it look real." Dad says and we practice tripping each other. Charlie trips me and I fall over. "Whoa!" I exclaim as I fall over. "Come on, make it look real. Act hurt!" Dad shouts and Karp looks up. "I am hurt." Karp exclaims. "Good, good. Now say it!" Dad shouts and we look over at him. "Take the fall! Act hurt! Get indignant!" We shout. "One more time!" Dad exclaims. "Take the fall! Act hurt! Get indignant!" We shout again. "Good! You guys are ready." Dad says and Charlie nd I roll our eyes.

(At The Game)

I was on the bench, holding my stick as I watched the team play. When a guy was shooting the puck, Goldberg dove over and started acting hurt and I roll my eyes. "Give me a break, ref! Open your eyes! Did you see what he did to me?" Goldberg questions as he skates over to us and looks at Dad expectantly. 

"Goldberg, you don't take the fall while they're shooting at you." Dad says. "Oh! Well, I guess you didn't explain that very well, did ya?" Goldberg questions. "Tessie, go." Dad says and I nod. I put my helmet on and I go in my place. I fist bump Jessie. I look over and I see the coach of the Jets talking to my Dad and he looks right at me and gives a nod and I send one back. 

"Let's go! Let's go!" Dad shouts and we get into position. We start playing and one of the players actually hits my gut and I fall ver. "Hey!" I shout and I take my helmet off and I skate up to the guy and slam my helmet in his chest. "You fight me, you better have a whole army behind you." I say and I put my helmet on and grab my hockey stick. 

"Cool it Tessie!" Dad shouts and I roll my eyes and re-position myself. "Let's go! Face-off!" The ref shouts and I glare at the player in front of me. "Okay, even 'em up, boys." The coach of the Jets shouts. "Here we go." I say and we start to play right as the puck hit the ground. 

Charlie got the puck and he started to soar across the ice and I grinned.  "That's it, Charlie. That's it!" Dad shouts but then Charlie gets pushed up against the wall of the rink and I see Dad giving Charlie a look of anticipation. "Come on!" Dad shouts but Charlie does not take the fall, which means we lost yet again. 

We went to the locker room and I took off my gear, leaving me in a t-shirt and leggings. "We can't even win when we cheat." Dad says. "Stupid cake-eater tricks!" Jesse says and I nod in agreement. "That was embarrassing." Connie says and I put my head in my hands and drone out the conversation. "Jesse, Terry, let's go." Mr. Hall says and I look up. "This is what I gave up my overtime pay for? To see my kids takin' falls?" Mr. Hall questions and he takes Jesse and Terry out of the locker room.

"Dad, I'm going to spend the night at Connie's if that's okay with you." I say and Dad nods. "Just be safe kiddo." Dad says and I nod. I grab my bag and I see Connie. "Walking home?" I question and she nods. We start walking home and I start humming. Connie walks next to me and I look forward. "I can't believe he wanted us to cheat." I say and Connie nods in agreement. We eventually made it to Connie's house and Mr. and Mrs. Moreau nodded in greeting.

We rushed upstairs and we sat on her bed. "Here." Connie says and she tosses me a bundle of clothes and I get dressed in the bathroom and I walk back to Connie's room and I see her on the phone with who I assume is Guy since she is all smiley and she is twirling the phone chord around her finger. "Yeah? Yeah. Alright. Bye." Connie says and she hangs up. I make kissy faces at her and she laughs as she turns beet red.  "All right, let's go to sleep." Connie says and she shuts off the lights and we go to sleep. But not me. I grab a piece of paper and I wrote a note down.

Hey Cons!

So I'm going to go back home. Kind of think my Dad needs me right now.

I put the note on the desk and I grabbed my clothes and got dressed back into my old clothes. I walked out of the house and I went to the pond. I saw Dad lying in the snow by the snow. "Dad?" I question and he sits up. "Tess? What are you doing here?" Dad questions and I walk over on the ice, it was kind of difficult but I still did it. 

"Whoa." I say and I re balance myself. "You okay Dad?" I question. "Yeah. I have to do something." Dad says and he stands up and he puts his boots on. "Where is Charlie's house?" Dad questions and I grin. "Come on!" I say and I lead him towards Charlie's apartment. Once we get there I grab my key ring and I open the gate and I walk inside. 

Once we get there Dad knocks on the door. "Hi, uh-" Dad is cut off by Ms. Conway. "Please, just go away. Charlie doesn't want... to be on the team any more, and neither he nor l have anything to say to you. Come on Tess." Mrs. Conway says and she invites me inside. "Doofus?" I question and I see him in the living room. "What'cha watching?" I question and I sit on the couch.

After a few moments Ms. Conway and my Dad come back inside. "Charlie. Somebody's here to see you." Ms. Conway says and Charlie and I peek out from the door and I see Charlie's smile drop. "Come on Tess." Ms. Conway says and we go to the kitchen. "How is life with your Dad?" Ms. Conway questions. "It's great actually. Things are much better than they were before." I say. "Do you want to stay for dinner?" Charlie questions and Ms. Conway and I walk out. "What?" I question the same time as my Dad. 

"Charlie!" Ms. Conway exclaims. "Uh, no, we-We can't. Uh-" Dad stops as he sees the pleading eyes I give him and he sighs. "Well, what are you havin'?" Dad questions and Charlie and I cheer.
