(Tessie POV)
I was walking around our house waiting for my dad to get home from work. He was an hour late, I rolled my eyes and wrote him a note.
Dear Dad,
I am going to be playing hockey with my friends I will be back in an hour or 2 love ya.
-Tessie signed at 5:45 pm
I nodded my head at the note. I placed it on the counter. I ran upstairs and grabbed my stick and skates. I put my winter clothes on and I walked to the frozen over pond. I saw all of my friends. "Hey people!" I say. "Hey Tess." Charlie says. Charlie has been like a brother to me for a while and his mom has been like a mother to me ever since my mom left. I smiled at him and we did our signature handshake. I sat on a log close by the pond and I tied my skates up and we started to play. Now I'll admit we weren't good at all. "Woah!" Averman said as he fell flat on his back. "Ooh sorry dude." I say helping him up. He nods and I check my watch. "Crap! I'm late. My dad's gonna go ballistic on me." I say grabbing my boots. "Aww bye Tessie." Connie my sister from another mister says giving me a hug. "Ah don't worry guys I'll be here tomorrow." I say giggling.
I tied my boots up and I ran home. I walk in and I see my dad on the couch. "Where were you young lady?" He asks and I sigh. I walk over to the counter and I give him the note. "You didn't see this did you?" I ask and he sighs and gives me a hug. "Sorry Tess I'm just really stressed, you should get going and go to bed." Dad says rubbing his forehead. I nod. "Okay, Dad, good night ." I say and he nods and sits on the couch. I sigh and go upstairs and change into my pajamas. I lay down but I hear a car engine and the screeching of tires. I feel my eyes get teary eyed but I don't let the tears fall. Dad is never here he is always at work and sometimes... A ten year old needs her dad.
(Time Skip)
It's the next day and I see my dad in a suit and tie. "So... Where are you going this dressed up?" I ask and he looks at me. "Court." He says fixing his tie. "Client?" I ask and he looks at me. "Me." He says and I look at him. "Why?" Dad looks at me frustrated. "Christ Tessie can't you go anywhere else?" He asks and I look at him shocked. "Fine... I'm sleeping over at Connie's house so don't worry if I don't come home." I say running upstairs. I grab a pair of pajamas and another pair of clothes for tomorrow. I grab my stick and skates and I run out of the house before my dad can say anything. I head to the frozen pond. "Hey guys." I say and I see everyone is here. "Hey Tessie." They all say. I walk over to Connie. "Hey can I sleepover tonight, Dad is gonna be in court and work all day maybe an overnighter." I say and Connie nods. We play our game for a while until it's sundown. When it's sundown we all start heading home. I start walking with Connie to her house. We get inside and I see Mrs. Moreau. "Hi Mrs. Moreau." I say with a wave. "Oh hello Tessie what brings you here?" She asks and I grin sheepishly at her. "Well my dad has another case today and well he may work overnight tonight." I say and Mrs. Moreau nods at me. "Okay dear that's alright." She says and I nod. Connie grins and drags me upstairs.
We sit in her room for a while. "So Conns how are you and Guy?" I ask and he face becomes beet red and I grin. "So things are going well I see." I say with a smirk. Connie shoves me slightly and I giggle. "We should get changed." Connie says and I nod. I grab my pajamas from my bag and I go to the bathroom to change. I come back in with a long t-shirt and pajama shorts. I see Connie in a shirt and pajama pants. I sit on the bed next to Connie. "Who do you think our coach will be since." I say while having a fake heart attack, Connie laughs then shrugs. "No clue." She says and I giggle. "So...Do you like anyone?" Connie asks while wiggling her eyebrows and I shove her slightly. "Nah, Imma wait a few years like when I'm 13 or 14." I say with a shrug and she laughs. We talk about random things then when we both become tired we go to bed.
(The Next Day)
I get up and I yawn, I see Connie isn't there so I get dressed and I put my boots on. I comb through my hair with my fingers and I sigh. I walk down the stairs and I see Connie with her hair in a signature braid. I smile at Mrs. Moreau and Mr. Moreau. "Good morning." I say sitting at the table. "Good morning dear." Mrs. Moreau says. "Good morning Mrs. Moreau." I say with a smile. We eat breakfast then we go back into Connie's room. We talk about random stuff for a while until we realize we are late for hockey. "Conns we're late." I say and she jumps up. We put our snow gear on then we grab our skates and sticks. "Bye!" We both exclaim rushing out the door. We get to the frozen over pond well since I took a shortcut I got there and I stood behind the guys as we watched a limo pull up into the ice. "They're drugs, I just know it." I say scaring Peter and Karp which makes me smirk. I see someone way unexpected get out of the limo...My dad?! I pull my snow hat over my eyes. "Yo, dude. You obviously in the wrong hood. This is my domain. This is a drug-free zone, you understand? We ain't buyin' nothin'. I'm feelin' generous today. So I'm gonna let you get your sorry vanilla booty outta here... before we be usin' your eyeballs as pucks." Jesse says and I smirk at him. "Thanks, bro, but I'm not goin' home 'til l take care of business." Dad says then he reaches into his coat and Jesse backs up. "He's got a gun!" Jesse says and we all back up, me mainly because the other boys were making me move back.
"Stand back." Jesse says and I roll my eyes. We see Dad holding up a paper. "Whew." Jesse says and I giggle quietly. "District Five Pee Wee hockey team. I'm Gordon Bombay. I'm the new coach." Dad says and my eyes bulge out of my head but the guys laugh. "What a joke." Jesse says then Peter says. "Yeah right." With an eye roll. "Afraid so dude got the roster right here." Dad says then he unfolds the sheet of paper. "Averman, Dave." Dad says and Averman looks up. "Bombay, Tessie." Dad says questioningly. I pull my hat even more over my face. "Conway, Charlie. Hall, Terry." Dad says and Charlie and Terry look up. "Here's the long and short end of it. l hate hockey and l don't like kids." Dad says and I look up. "What do you mean you don't like kids?" I ask him taking my hat off. "Considering your daughter is right here." I say and Dad looks shocked. I shake my head and I look away as Jesse speaks up. "What's this supposed to be a pep talk?" Jesse says with a smirk. "l'm sure this'll be a real bonding experience. Maybe one day one of you will even write a book about it in jail." Dad says and Jesse scoff. "Funny." Jesse says sarcastically. "Is there a goalie?" Dad asks and Goldberg speaks up. "Only for a little while. I'm movin' back to Philly." Goldberg says and I roll my eyes. "Thank you for sharing that." Dad says. "No problem." Goldberg says not getting his sarcasm. "All right, get out on the ice. Let me see what you can do." Dad says. Oh boy.
