Song : after dark - Mr. kitty
It had been a week of training at the palace , and it got a little harder every time to return back to our grand living space in the prince's court when every time I looked around it stayed permanently half empty. I didn't want to think about what had happened to the other three of us. They could be dead right now and we couldn't know.
Even the comforts of my warm bed that was still hot from traces of lingering light couldn't chase my shadows away. The darkness was all consuming within me.
So that was how I found myself walking through the shadows that seemed to move aside for me underneath the huge structure above me. I took the same route that we took daily now, winding my way through the cold empty halls of the palace to the courtyard so that I would be able to see the stars.
With the shivers that came with my tiredness I consoled myself by forming and reforming the shadows into small animals that moved around me , and blades that spun through my fingers in a revolving pattern. It distracted me , along with the night sky here. I could see it through the panels of the wide windows I was waking past.
In London there had never been stars, but after countless nights where I couldn't sleep , I had come to crave the glow that they created amidst the darkness of the sky. It must have had a likening to the glow of streetlights and cars I guess. For all I knew they could have been the exact same stars from our world, but I just needed that light to hold onto. The moons were different here too, many of them were strung in the sky, creating shallow glows through all the windows of the palace as I walked slowly onwards. And it was quiet here , not like at home when there was always a car passing by, I was unnerved.
I pulled my sweater tighter around me and hugged myself as I walked. The others seemed content to this routine we had developed the past days but it only helped to unsettle me , never truly eased by the comforts of this place.
We were in a strange world, how the fuck was anyone even okay. But no one needed to know that I wasn't . I had already seen what had happened when reality hit the four of us all over again.
It happened a day ago. When we had all been training. Me with the head guard, Defne with his second , Rosie with the king and Isa with Lorcan. I had sensed as the darkness in the cool air was forced apart to make room for a blinding light that seemed to enter the prince's eyes as he fought with Isa.
I had watched as he had dropped his sword and slumped to his knees , his head tilted up in an uncomfortable unnatural way. He began to shake and we had stopped fighting, wondering what trick he was playing now. Isa had even screamed at him to get up , thinking it was a joke.
After her realisation that something was utterly wrong, she had dropped to her knees and fumbled at his shoulders in a shaken stupor, trying to wake him from whatever was happening.
The rest of us had stood where we had halted fighting. Captivated by the glowing eyes of the prince as he whimpered from the heaviness it seemed to place upon him. His eyes had seemed to pulse with a scorching light, and as painful as it was to look upon, I'm sure it was painful much more for Lorcan himself. We hadn't fully realised what it had done to him until after. Hadn't realised the pain that came with his gift of sight.
I had watched when he slumped further , drained of energy from whatever vision he had been plagued with. He had sunk to the ground with a whoosh of air, like the light had taken the breath out of his lungs.
Isa had given in slightly then, though no one would bring it up. She had clutched him right to her, holding him tight with his body that lay tumbled upon the stone as we watched his eyes roll up again as if he had awoken from a sleep. He had blinked deliriously at Isa's unsettled expression , wordlessly reaching for her, clutching at the arms that held him like a frightened child. I had seen as his eyes had glossed with a fear that seemed akin to my shadows. He had let out several sounds of fear due to the fact that his pain seemed too immense for words.
