COME HOME

"guess this a bad time to introduce you two" ashton awkwardly sways on his feet, gesturing between emma and kaykay.

kaykay delivers a gentle jab to ashton's side. she doesn't even know the girl in front of her but it's obvious she's in no state to meet someone new.

all eyes were on maya as michael's hands grabbed her and attempted to pull her backwards, wanting to get her out of there before emma or luke blew up.

his hands were cold, and with a simple touch maya knew her husband was mad. his hands were so warm and gentle earlier that day, and she was terrified to turn around and look at him.

though looking at emma wasn't any better.

it was impeccable how quickly emma's love for the girl turned to hate, as if she didn't even fight it. the negative emotions swallowed her.

emma fought to keep herself empathic even as every terrible thing she didn't want to believe came true.

it hurt, it hurt so badly that emma couldn't breathe.

she was in this unimaginable position because of her best friend.

if maya didn't delete the voicemail, luke and emma would've been together again. emma never would've accepted caleb's proposal, and caleb wouldn't be blackmailing her now.

in this moment, blinded by all of the hate, she wouldn't have cared if maya walked out and never came back.

she let the pain consume her, legs buckling under her as she wipes the tears from her eyes.

luke places a gentle hand on emma's shoulder, his lips curling downwards as she grows tense under his touch. "em... why don't we go somewhere and talk"

luke knew this would lead somewhere ugly and wanted to diffuse the situation as best he could. his heart hurt tremendously by maya's action, though it was much worse for emma considering it came from her best friend.

and truthfully, if emma were to actually marry caleb, luke would blame maya. as selfish as it sounds, he knows he would have told emma to come home. despite him breaking up with her, emma would have found her way back to him. but thanks to maya, he never even got the chance.

the blonde truly didn't see his friendship with maya being mended if things don't go well on saturday, and he is sure emma feels the same way.

the two girls stared at one another, as if waiting for the other to say something.

"why?" emma speaks first, voice cracking as she continues. "why would you do that to me?"

emma felt like such a shitty host. her friends literally flew across the country to be here for her and she couldn't even manage to give them an ounce of attention.

"why don't we all go inside so you and luke can talk alone..." michael proposes, once again pulling maya back.

emma shakes her head, appalled that michael thinks he could just pull maya out of this. "no, she's not going anywhere until she looks me in the eye and tells me why she did it"

"it's fine, mike. just take the others and go inside" maya speaks softly, pushing michael away and letting out a breath once the door shuts and she's left alone with two people who probably want to kill her.

with the tightening of her throat and a short intake of breath, maya steps closer to emma. "i'm so sorry," she says. "i wanted to tell you but the timing—"
