a flight from san francisco, california to richmond, virginia is precisely eight hours and twelve minutes, in case you were wondering (this is total bullshit pls don't fact check me).
emma was nestled in her seat, by the window as requested. they had only taken off thirty minutes ago, and ashton was already snoring next to her. it was only six in the morning here, but the time difference would surely affect them once they landed.
luke and maya were cuddled up behind them, laughing and talking as if people weren't trying to sleep. emma grew annoyed at her failed attempts to drown out the noise behind her, and she snapped in her seat and gave her friends a death glare.
"shut the hell up" she whined, peeking her head over her seat to scold the two giggly adults.
luke's face was slightly sunburnt from his time on the lake, adding the smallest tint of color to his otherwise pale face. he wore a plain grey sweatshirt and was munching on chips when emma yelled at them.
he grinned from ear to ear and lazily tossed a piece at her face, thinking she would laugh it off like she usually did.
but emma hasn't slept in almost two days, she was stressed beyond belief and very much on edge. she was scared and anxious to come home, and luke's angelic laugh was the last thing she wanted to hear while she was internally having a mental breakdown.
"throw something else at me and i'll come back there and cut your dick off so you can never have kids" she warned, no hint of sarcasm was present in her voice.
luke gulped and sunk in his seat as his mouth fell into a thin line. "uh — sorry" he scratched the back of his neck and gave her a soft smile.
emma scoffed and turned back in her seat, closing her eyes with the smallest hope that sleep would take over — though she knew it wouldn't.
plane rides were louder than she remembered — a baby crying, the rustling of a wrapper, the loud chatter of the people around her — all of these things were putting her on edge. she felt tense and she needed sleep.
emma wasn't sure how much time had gone by, but ashton and maya were passed out and emma really needed to pee. she swiftly climbed over ashton and maneuvered her way towards the bathroom, shoving luke's head as she passed by. luke laughed and slapped her arm before leaning back in his seat.
emma was walking back from the bathroom and felt the plane jolting from the turbulence. before she could fall, luke briskly grabbed her and pulled her onto him so she was sitting on his lap.
"oh—thanks for catching me" emma awkwardly coughed and repositioned herself.
"told you i'd never let you down" luke winked.
emma playfully shoved him and laughed for the first time in two days.
"has anyone ever told you how clumsy you are?" luke asked with a quizzical look on his face. he rested his hands on the base of her waist and watched as she squirmed against him.
"lots of times" she nodded. emma moved to get up, but luke held her down with enough force that emma didn't feel like fighting him on it.
"are you okay?"
luke didn't know the full extent of the situation with emma's father, but from what ashton told
him, luke knew she must be going through a tough time.
"yeah, it's just — yeah, i'm fine" she forced a fake smile.
luke frowned, he felt like she had the upper hand. emma knew more about luke than he knew about her and luke hated that. he wanted to get to know her, but she was closed off and distant to people who weren't close to her.
