BACHELORETTE PARTY
four years later
"em...emma... are you even listening to me?" maya shook the absentminded girl out of her thoughts, rolling her eyes at the sight of emma getting lost in thought again.
"i was listening, i promise — get that wand away from me before you stab my eye out" emma groaned and swatted her best friend's hand away, shoving the mascara back into its tube.
"what were you thinking about?" maya wasn't trying to pry, she just wanted to know what had emma so googly eyed.
"same thing i always am" emma said, a light blush instantly spreading across her face.
"which is?"
emma shrugged, slightly embarrassed to be put on the spot like this. "the first time i told him i loved him"
"oh right, i remember this story. you were courageous for the first time in your life and said i love you first"
"i'll ignore your passive aggressive comment," emma rolled her eyes and gave maya the finger. "because that was a good day" she confessed, getting lost in thought once more.
"i'm sure it was, now go put this on" maya tossed a leather skirt at emma's head.
"why is it so short?" emma stared at the material in horror.
"it's your bachelorette party! i want you to look hot," maya pouted. "it's your last night as a single woman, and as your maid of honor, it's my sole purpose to make sure you enjoy it"
"the wedding isn't for another six weeks, maya" emma reminded her.
"a lot can happen in six weeks" she retorted, a smug smirk was tugging at her lips.
little did they know just how much can really happen.
"don't worry about me, i'll have plenty of nights to live out my life as a single woman," emma giggled, finishing up the last touches of her make up.
"unless i were to elope six months into my relationship like someone else i know" emma shot a teasing glance towards maya, who had, in fact, eloped.
"hey," maya put her hands up in defense. "when you know, you know" she tilted her head to the side and smiled, showing emma she didn't have a single regret about getting married at the ripe age of 22 to the love of her life.
that night maya had dropped emma off to meet luke, she stopped by michael's house. he asked her to be his girlfriend, meaning they became official just three short hours before luke and emma did.
it was an out of character decision for maya, and emma was concerned that her best friend was rushing things. though throughout the short course of her relationship with michael, maya changed a lot. but in the best way possible. and once the pair tied the knot, maya was the best version of herself. less apologetic and soft spoken, and much more confident in her own skin.
emma swears it's because she's had sex, though maya denies it.
"it's not always that easy, maya" emma sighed. she pulled out her cellphone to check the time — and to see that ashton still hasn't rsvp'd to her wedding invitation.
noticing the frown that was perfectly resting on emma's face, maya peeked over her shoulder, noticing that ashton was the cause of emma's change in behavior — just like he had been for the past eight months when each of the boys had replied that they were going, while ashton responded with radio silence.
at this point, emma would prefer it if ashton said he wouldn't be attending. at least that way she would know he's alive, and wouldn't have to overthink the situation. was he mad at her and just ignoring it? had he not received it? the possibilities were endless — and emma hated that.
