maya sneakily crept into her best friends' room and jumped on emma's bed bright and early thursday morning, earning a groan and a slap to the face by emma's pillow — she was not a morning person.
maya ignored emma's crankiness and insisted they have a girls day because they had been so caught up with their boyfriends that they weren't spending as much time together. emma obliged, but only after maya agreed to let her sleep for another few hours.
once the clock hit ten, emma trudged out of bed and into the shower — which is the only thing that can fully wake her up in the mornings. she hated coffee and wouldn't be caught dead drinking it, leaving her feeling unenergized and sluggish most mornings.
as the water trickled down emma's back, she found herself slowly falling asleep again. but it wasn't entirely her fault, she had been out with luke again last night. he had a last-minute appointment and forced the girl to tag along, giving his famous speech of "you said you wanted to come with me every time" to which emma politely gave him the finger and slid into his passenger seat. she was beginning to regret ever saying that, but she found comfort in the fact that luke wasn't going to these things alone.
"hurry up, you've been in there for almost an hour!" maya shouted, banging on the door in the process. emma sighed and turned off the water, she quickly wrapped a towel around herself and exited the bathroom, making sure to shoot maya a playful glare on her way back to her bedroom. she heard the shower start again and knew she had plenty of time to get ready.
she checked her phone and saw a couple of messages. one was from ash who sent her a good morning text and said he wanted to call her later. she sent him a quick reply and scanned the other messages; her older brother had also texted her, asking when he could come visit — to which she replied 'never' but she was only half joking. she was surprised to see a text from luke, considering they had only texted a handful of times. he simply asked if she was as tired as he was, to which she laughed and told him that she was.
emma heard the water being shut off and rushed to get ready. maybe if she was ready to leave before maya for the first time ever, maya would stop giving her so much shit about being slow.
unfortunately, today was not that day. maya was perched on the couch — fully dressed and ready to start the day, while emma had only just finished getting ready and gave maya a sluggish smile. "one day i'll be ready before you"
maya scoffed and rolled her eyes "I wouldn't count on it. what should we do today?"
emma pondered her options for a moment. there really wasn't much to do in their small town, but they always managed to have fun together. "mall?" emma asked. she figured she could use a couple more sweatshirts if luke was going to keep riding her around town on his motorcycle.
"perfect"

the girls arrived at the shopping mall in record time, it was still early so there wasn't much traffic. the mall wasn't crowded either, which meant smaller lines. both of the girls had their impatient moments, and standing in long lines was one of them.
"where to first?" maya asked, hooking her arm with emma's and walking into the large mall.
"JC Penny?" emma suggested and began leading the way, not waiting for maya's answer. the girls reached the store and began browsing through a rack of clothes. they weren't necessarily looking for anything, but if they saw something cute they would buy it.
"did you see the bruise on luke's face?" maya asked, she had meant to ask emma earlier but it slipped her mind. "yeah, i did" emma decided to keep it short and sweet. if she didn't over-answer a simple question then maybe she won't babble like an idiot and accidentally spill what had happened.
