A/N: Random unplanned chapter; partially to cover the time lapse, and partially for the family fluff. ;)

Posting early because I have a specific chapter I want to post on Saturday!

Fontaine woke up at five in the morning, just as she had for the last four days. Groaning in annoyance, Fontaine tried calling Finn. As she expected, he was still sleeping.

Instead of trying to go back to sleep, Fontaine got up and went to the bridge. Sometimes Kaiko would be awake by then, but Fontaine had the bridge to herself that morning. She sat in the pilot's chair to think.

She and Finn were still trying to figure out the connection, or whatever they were calling it. Fontaine still thought of it as a curse, even if Finn was convinced it wasn't all bad.

Nereus hadn't been any help. He insisted he only knew about Lemurian magic, but promptly refused to tell Fontaine anything about even Lemurian magic. Fontaine was pretty sure Nereus did that just to bug her.

She was starting to suspect that Finn was wrong in his theory of one of them sleeping for the other. They both wanted to return to their usual sleeping habits, but couldn't seem to. Once Fontaine roused in the morning, she was up for the day. And Finn had discovered that it took him much longer than normal to fall asleep at night, resulting in him waking up late.

Hearing the bridge door open, Fontaine turned to see Kaiko enter.

"Up early again today?" Kaiko asked.

"Yep." Fontaine held her thumb and forefinger until they were almost touching. "I'm this close to telling Ant to keep me awake for as long as possible tonight so I can stop waking up at five."

"Oh, it's not so bad." Kaiko caught Fontaine in a one-armed hug when Fontaine gave up the pilot's seat. "We get some time alone without the guys around."

Fontaine leaned into the hug with an appreciative hum. Even if the two of them just stared into the ocean, it was nice to have Kaiko to herself for a bit.

Rather suddenly, Fontaine found herself thinking about when Finn explained about Violet dying. Fontaine couldn't imagine losing Kaiko ever, never mind when she was still ten. Did Finn think about his mom much?

"Fontaine?"

At Kaiko's voice, Fontaine realized she'd tensed. She made herself relax as much as she could and leaned her head on Kaiko's shoulder so she wouldn't move away.

"Nothing, just... this is nice," Fontaine said.

"Yeah," Kaiko said, squeezing Fontaine's shoulder.

Maybe waking up so early wasn't so bad.
